"In any field of inquiry, the beginner is more likely than the expert to make important discoveries."

Our society is undergoing a process of rapid development in which science serves a leading role. Is the beginner more likely than the expert to make important discoveries in any field of inquiry? I fundamentally agree with the speaker with the notion that beginners are quite responsible for some significant discoveries. However, the speaker overlooks the crucial role the experienced experts play in the process of scientific discoveries.

I agree with the speaker with the respect to some fields of inquiry where the beginner is more likely than the expert to make important discoveries. When talking about novices, we cannot but appreciate their traits that contribute to their luck in finding significant discoveries. Firstly, unaware of the embarrassment and difficulties lying on the road to success, the beginners raise much courage to do what they think correct, regardless of the punishment of failure. Owing to the ignorance and the lack of experience, it seems easier for them to insist on their original beliefs when encountering frustration. And more importantly, the beginners do not hold authorial yet somehow dogmatic theories. Everything seems fresh to them, every problem means a challenge to them, and therefore every success may encourage them a lot. Without the burden of given experience, they will rack their brains to pursue what is truth and eagerly to put their assumptions into action. And sometimes a novice could bring his experience of other fields of study to the new subject, as a mother's milk to a new-born boy, which leads to more possibilities for them to make important discoveries. Take Francis Crick, who majored in physics in his early time period of research. Due to the hubris he learned from physics, Crick was more daring than typical biologist who mainly concerned themselves with the daunting problems of biology and not the past success of physics and gave birth to the discovery of the molecular structure of nucleic aids.

However, without the precious experience, novice would not always be the lucky dogs; and we should not underestimate the fundamental and even determinate role of given experience. Admittedly, sometimes too much emphasis on experience may be the encumbrance which would prevent people from broad vision of certain problems. Yet, it provides a thorough and profound thought which is indeed required during the process of inquiry. For example, some phenomena during the research are so fleeting that they are not easily grasped especially by beginners. But the experts can be more familiar with elementary principles and theories of the field, figure out what are the key problems easily, discern the real from unreal among certain issues more efficiently, and thus make wise decision which helps to find the reality. Due to all these merits above, experts serve as crucial status which cannot be replaced in any field of inquiry. We can imagine that without the guidance of the experts, what the beginners have found remain meaningless and reality is still hided behind some complex phenomena.

Accordingly, the beginners and experts are equally important to the advance of any field of inquiry. The beginner equipped with imagination, creativity and ambition may have the courage of suspecting and challenge the accepted principles and theories while the experts endowed with experience and prudence may be cautious in establishing theories and applying them into practice. In this view of point, with the guidance of the experts, the novices can avoid the trap lying on the road to the success, and at the same time with the assistance of beginners, the professionals can escape from some trivial routines and devote more time to optimal research. Considering their respective advantages, we should not bring out arbitrary conclusion which of them would be more likely to make significant discoveries in any field of inquiry. Instead they should learn from each other and effective cooperation between them should also be encouraged in the process of inquiry.

In sum, the speaker's assertion is without merit that the beginners could offer available opportunities for the development of a particular field. But at the same time, we can not make out an extreme conclusion that, never can discoveries be made without the beginners' benefaction for the traits of experts. Both outside beginners and experienced experts are equally important to the flourish of any field of inquiry.
