TOPIC: ISSUE147 - "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
WORDS: 449 DATE: 2007-1-27
The speaker asserts that one must choose between tradition and modernization, because they are incompatible. I agree insofar as there are some conflicts between modernization and tradition in certain cases, and therefore the two are mutually exclusive. However, in my view, in a large sense, the relationship between tradition and modernization are complementary.
To begin with, I agree that tradition and modernization are incompatible in certain instances and tradition should give place to modernization. Tradition is relative to beliefs, values and ways of life, and so on, while modernization refers to the urbanization and industrialization, and so on. It's inevitable that conflicts exist in the interaction between the two. The old-fashioned conceptions may impede modernization, and in the mean time, the process of modernization possibly destroys tradition ruthlessly. In certain circumstances, for the sake of modernization, tradition should be sacrificed. This is true when it comes to architectures. As the representatives of traditional culture, architectures may take up a great amount of lands. However, in order to carry out the modernization, a valuable historic architecture should be only located in special place such as architectural museum, environs and so on. A myriad of skyscrapers should emerge in avenues instead of old-fashioned houses. Furthermore, in order to improve the efficiency of work and life, modern ways of communication such MSN, E-mail should take the place of traditional letters.
However, I disapprove the statement because it seems to recommend that tradition and modernization are completely incompatible. Oftentimes, the process of modernization is to transform tradition rather than upset tradition. In a large sense, modernization is based on tradition. Here is an example that is persuasive. In modern English language, many works derived from ancient Greek and Latin language, which could be seen as the tradition of English language. These traditional languages constitute the foundation of modern English language. Therefore, the correct way of modernization is to reform its tradition.
Furthermore, traditional culture may contribute to think over temporary problems. In the mean time, modernization will promote the excavation, preservation and diffusion of tradition. For instance, many traditional wisdoms are still making great philosophic senses and can inspire us to solve the present problems. On the other hand, by means of modern high-tech, archeologist could excavate more and more information about tradition and cultural heritage can be preserved. Moreover, tradition do not limit in some extent, because it can be diffused through the modern media such as television, network and so on.
In sum, I concede tradition and modernization conflicts in certain instances, and we must choose one between them. However, the speaker overrates the contradiction between the two. In the final analysis, we should treat tradition and modernization in a dialectic view. |
