Should government preserve publicly owned wilderness areas even though they are extremely remote in their natural state, as the speaker asserts? I strongly agree with the speaker that these wilderness areas should be protected even though they are extremely remote and government should play a vital role in this preservation.
To begin with, wilderness areas should be preserved for their importance in ecosystem. As an indispensable component of the ecosystem, wilderness areas contribute not only to the ecological balance but also to social health and well being. Among all these value, the most significant one is biodiversity. For example, in the late 1970s, due to the Yellow Dwarf virus (YDV), more than 25 million acres of rice was dead in Southeast Asia. And the scientists wanted to find out some rice species that can resist this YDV. But unfortunately they gain nothing after checking all the rice gene pool in the world. Several years later, some scientists found a wild rice which can resist the YDV in a wilderness in India, and by cross-fertilizing they eventually dissipated this disaster. So this example aptly illustrates the importance of wilderness areas to human beings. And we should try our best to protect the wilderness areas.
In addition, though some extremely remote wilderness areas are accessible to only a few people, they should also be preserved. As know to all, the world is an indivisible whole, so one part damaged will soon transmit to the rest. For example, the depletion of Ozone layer in Antarctica aptly manifests this. Due to the overuse of refrigerator不太合适吧 and other electric appliance, a lot of Freon was spread to the atmosphere and thus caused the increasing depletion Ozone layer. The Ozone layer prevents harmful ultraviolet radiation, thus depletion of Ozone layer may cause weakening immunity of human being and global warming. Therefore, even with respect to some remote areas, we should do whatever we can to preserve these wilderness areas, and consequently protecting ourselves.
Finally, government should play a key role in the preservation of wilderness areas. As the government has far more advantaged functions such as legislation, it can protect wilderness much better than other nongovernmental organizations or individuals. For example, there is an unofficial organization called Wild Yak Team in Tibet protecting Tibetan Antelope. Comparing to the governmental preservation, this team has several disadvantages. First, the team members must work full time to combat those illegal hunters and thus they have no financial supports. Second, they have limited members and they have no right to punish those illegal hunters. To the contrary, the government can establish some special laws by legislation and it had enough financial budgets指代不明?. The Wilderness Act of 1964 established the National Wilderness Preservation can best prove this怎么prove了. Thus, the government should take the major responsibility to preserve the wilderness areas.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that no matter how remote these wilderness areas are, government should preserve the wilderness areas for the benefits of present people and future generations.
