In the age of television, is reading books not as important as it once was? The arguer thinks so. I concede that people can learn much by watching television especially distant education and art education. However, reading books is not replaced by watching television as a learning way.
In deed, television is one of great inventions in the last century. It can bring vivid graph and voice which easily seize people's attention. Provided by television, exact records for certain event show every detail and give audiences a true feel. But in this point books can't do well as television no matter how clear the author narrates. People can receive world-wide programs and promptly know what happens on the other side of earth only if they turn on television and connect it to cable. Current affairs is recorded by camera and broadcast by television without any delay. For instance, when a football player kicks a goal in World Cup, football fans all over the world watching games by television feel excited at the same time. Compared with television, there is no denying that it takes several months, even years to write and publish a book reporting certain current affair.
While television is often treated as a entertainment way, books have much advantage as a learning way. Firstly, books are easily available, much cheaper than television and portable in no need of electricity, wave and cable. Secondly, books give people free imagination by giving a verbal account of certain event, while television directly shows exact records. Thirdly, people are placed in an active position when reading books, rather than passively receiving television program. For instance, readers can underline the content which they are interested in and skim other unrelated contents on books.
Admittedly, as an advanced teaching facility, television serves well to art education by providing vivid graph and is widely applied to distant education that students all over the country can receive a lecture which a teacher gives by television. However, as every child is inquired to practise reading skills and limited to watch television by his or her parents, it is accepted by most people that reading books is a main learning way at present, rather than watching television, even in the age of television.
