What do we study history for? The speaker contends that the study of history can only benefit us when it relates to our daily lives. However, I strongly hold that there are a great deal of advantages of studying history, for it is not valuable only when comes to our daily lives.
First of all, studying historical examples of courage in the face of adversity can provide motivation to people face their own personal fears in life. There are a myriad of historical moguls in various fields not only impressed(impressing) their descendents
(desendants) by outstanding intellectual works, but also touched(touching) generations by their courage and persistence. For further lending credence to my position, I can think of no better cases than the following one. (-)Giordano Bruno, the Italian philosopher who used Corpernican principles to develop a pantheistic monistic philosophy, condemned for heresy by the Church and burned at the stake. Although he was trapped in troubles after breaking down the fetter of the Church, and even was sentenced to death by the Inquisition, he never bended his knees. For centuries, Bruno's bravery and perseverance have encouraged people to conquer tough things and firmly hold our(their) own faith. This illustrates that without studying historical stories, we may easily fail to stick to our dreams.(觉得你这段在证明因为学了历史,所以我们更能抓住梦想,可是你并没有任何一个句子证明了不学历史,就抓不住理想啊?所以最后一句换肯定句可能好一点吧~)
At the national level, studying history can assist to maintain the tradition. As history conceals everything's origin, it also harbors a nation's core value and old customs. Since tradition is formed and developed from the ancient time, people need to consult to the history for ensuring that the traditional rituals and festivals held currently are kept in a correct way and the meaning of those traditional customs has(have) not been distorted. Meanwhile, scrutinizing the history is the process of revealing ancestors' life(lives) which can reflect their primary thought and values of society in the past time, so people would find out their own ethnic character and spirit from it. Hence, as those old moral merits and some valuable ideas are discovered by studying history, instead of being ignored or even lost, are likely to be cherished by today's people as precious wealth of a nation.
On the other hand, it is essential to(for) each nation to study history of others as well. As communication plays such a vital role in nowadays globalization, the skill of(that) how to communicate is required all over the world. People always consider that learning the superficial manners is enough to cover all the social activities with foreigners. However, the absence of studying other countries' history, would frequently invite misunderstanding. For instance, it is impolite to ask a Chinese that whether he/she is Japanese, as there are historical hatreds between these two ethnics, and Chinese would even(rather) consider a question like that is(such a question as) an offense. Therefore, in today's multi-cultural society, being equipped with history of different cultures can smooth the way of communicating with each other, at least enable us to avoid displeasing others.
To sum up, the study of history is never limited to contribute to our everyday life, for it provides benefits to us in several respects, whether at the individual, national and global level as discussed above. |
