196 "Technology creates more problems than it solves, and may threaten or damage the quality of life."科技产生的问题多于所解决的,可能威胁或降低人们的生活质量。
Whether technology creates more problems than it solves and even threatens or damages the quality of life is such a controversial issue that we can not draw a conclusion in a hurry. By contrast, we should consider it by case-to-case analysis instead. So far as I am concerned, technology itself is a double-edged sword and has both benefits and detrimental effects to our society. It is the way we human beings utilize technology rather than its intrinsic nature that determines how well technology will serve us.
Looking back on human history, the improvement of technology has been influenting almost every aspects of our life and modern society ever since the industrial revolution. With the help of mobile phones and internet, people nowadays are able to communicate with others from miles away by; in use of modern medical technologies such as CT, NMR and X-ray, we can survive from numerous diseases which were deathful and fatal before and can generally enjoy a much longer lifespan than ancient people; with the birth of moleculor biology, it is now entirely possible to cure lethal genetic diseases at DNA level and probe into the pathogenic mechanism; further more, the whole world has been becoming a globle village where people from different country could visit and communicate with each other at any time they want by taking advantage of the world wide web and forms of transportation. Since all of these are brought about by high technologies, it is undeniable that technology has solved a large amount of problems to help human beings survive and thrive, and thus in other words, it indeed benefits human society a lot.
However, as coins have two sides, technology has also inevitably created a considerable amount of problems while doing good for the quality of our life. Its side effects, not only include environmental degradationsuch as air pollution caused by industrial waste gas, global warming by greenhouse effect, and exhaustion of resources by overdevelopment, but also give rise to social problems, for example, unemployment caused by automation in industry, alienation of human relation by the spread of internet and so forth. We can not ignore that such foregoing problems are to a certain extent harmful to our environment and society, and even more fully possible to threaten or demage the quality of life.
Be that as it may, we should realize and admit a fact that all above side effects are mainly coming from unappropriate using method human have taken. Take atomic enerage for instance, it can be used in generating electricity which may benefit regions in poverty and can be also utilized as atom bomb or nuclear weapon which greatly threatens the peace of the world. Therefore, in my opinion it completely depends on how we use it that technology will improve or demage the quality of life.
In conclusion, technology itself is just a kind of tremendous yet objective power, and thereby cannot decide which direction to go in by itself. Only human can achieve this by learning and insisting the correct way and warning ourselves all long.
