Issue103 【Persistence 小组】第七次作业,赶着补回来的,可能问题不少 103. "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."
As modern society tends to be more pragmatic than ever before, it seems that everything concerned today has value only when
it is relevant to our daily lives at the first glance. I concede that the speaker is on the correct philosophical side of the
issue, however, for my perspective, the study of history is far more beneficial than reaching that.
To begin with, gaining knowledge of history which is related to our daily lives does benefit to individuals in modern
societies. As we all know, every individual can learn many things, which will be guides for his/her life(好像没有guide for这种说法), from the
experiences of the people living in the past time. For instance, an enterpriser can get some valuable ideas and learn how to
make his/her enterprise more successful by learning the methods(which或者去掉have been) have been used by the chief of another developed enterprise(这句话不太懂大意), and even sometimes, he/she can simply avoid the mistakes made by the executives who have the experiences of leading a company to the bankruptcy.(说明了study history&人日常生活有关,但是最后一句的大意不是很明了)
On the other hand are two compelling arguments that the study of history has value only when it relates to our daily lives.
One such argument is that every time when paying our attention on the great human achievements of the past, we are deeply
inspired. Though we cannot learn the direct skills or methods to solve the problems we faced in the related fields from these
achievements, our spirits can be lifted by learn about the accomplishments. For example, when facing the great difficulties
and having no ideas with the solutions of them, an engineer can be well inspirited and have the courage by listening to the
symphonies composed by Beethoven, one of the greatest musician of the past, who began to lose his hearing and was deaf
ultimately during his creative works.(此句话不太通顺中间的定语从句使用较为混乱) Even though the engineer cannot get any direct ideas about how to solve his/her own problems, he/she would never(never用的较为武断可以多用may等)be depressed.(这段话前半段阐述较好后半段的例子举的不是非常到位)
A second argument against the speaker's position has to do with the mistakes of the past, which can teach us as a society how
to avoid repeating those mistakes. For instance, from 1960s to 1970s, the so called 'cultural revolution' in China has
brought a big confusion to the whole society, and the whole political, economic and cultural systems have almost collapsed
for Chinese people at that time were incited irrationally. Hopefully, as a society we can apply this lesson by adopting more
rational plans, as which are conducted by Chinese people nowadays, to make the society prosperous. (最后一个例子举的比较好,论证很恰当没有大的语病)
In the final analysis, the study of history has value not only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives, but also
to all our activities: from minutiae in our lives to meaningful ideals of one culture.
