147. "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."

The speaker asserts that tradition and modernization are incompatible and one must choose between them. At the first glance,
this opinion seems to be somewhat appealing, for, tradition does yield to modernization in some special cases, but further
reflection tells me that I cannot agree with it for following reasons.

To begin with, tradition and modernization, which are not completely exclusive, do exist in today's society at the same time,
and both can be accepted by most modern people. For example, playing firecracker, which is looked as a kind of celebration
during Spring Festival, the traditional Chinese festival to celebrate the new year of traditional Chinese lunar calendar, has
changed a lot for the reason of modernization. In order to protect the environment and reduce the disasters caused by playing
firecracker in modern society, some restriction has been adopted, and playing firecracker is still accepted by Chinese people
as the celebration of Spring Festival.

Secondly, a family, or even an individual, would not deny the tradition when he/she lives in a modernized society and accept
the modern living style. As we all know, the exogamy, which has exist for thousands of years, contributes to the
compatibility of tradition and modernization for a family, especially when one of the couple belongs to a majority
nationality which has been modernized. To maintain their family and respect each other, one will accept the culture and
living style of another, and the couple will choose a style, which embrace both tradition and modernization, despite how we
call it. Therefore, tradition and modernization are compatible in their family.

Admittedly, in some cases, tradition has to yield entirely to the needs of modern life, or it will disappear completely.
Matriarchy, which used to be popular and looked as modernization in ancient time, has almost been extinct for it didn't keep
up with the pace of modernization of our human being.

In conclusion, a mature society should embrace both tradition and modernization at the same time to keep its harmony, and
intended exclusion of each other benefits nothing to our society. As an individual in the society, one should take the
responsibility, and of course has the ability, to accept both of them to make our society more harmonious.
