TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

   The speaker asserts that all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach in order to improve the quality of instruction. I agree that certain working experiences do help instruction, but it is hard to practice the author's advice and we can find better way to achieve such goal.
     First of all, I concede that working experience is helpful in raising the quality of education. In my experience, it is always the teacher who has some working experiences that provide the most vivid education. To dive into the knowledge along is always boring because the academic discipline is always abstracted. Students will show much more enthusiasm if them know the practical value of what they are studying. Thus to make the education more efficient, it is theoretically good to ask teachers to work outside the academic world.
     However, the conclusion is too ideal that it has some vital fallacies that listed as below. First, it is hard for teachers to find proper work outside in the certain profession. No employer would like to employ someone whose purpose is not to do his best to make profit for the company but to learn some working experience and than quit in the half way. Second, the requirement is too harsh that it has not taken the teachers opinion into consideration. May be they choose the academic world just because they don't like the world outside. What's more, the shortage of educators will be worse due to the unjust requirement. If parts of the faculty are working outside, where can we find people to replace them for the specific time?
     In the second place, some may argue that the key purpose of education is prepared the students for the outside word and let them more successful in working. I can't agree with it more, but we should consider again before we get to such conclusion that all faculty should have working experience. We have other ways that are more efficient to reach our goal. For example, we could invite some successful figure in certain professions outside the academic word to give a lecture to the studentswhich may have the same effect. We could also add more experiment and study on certain professions, or require the students not the teachers to work outside the academic world in their last grade.
    To sum up, we should not require all faculty to work outside the academic world in order to get the practical experiences that might help raising the quality of education on the college and university level. It is better to leave this job to people who have already succeeded in their work while let the teachers focus on the education and the study of a certain subject.
