A117The following is a memo from the business manager of Valu-Mart stores.
"Over 70 percent of the respondents to a recent survey reported that they are required to take more work home with them from
the workplace than they were in the past. Since Valu-Mart has not seen impressive sales in its office-supply departments in the past,
we
should take advantage of this work-at-home trend by increasing at all Valu-Mart stores the stock of home office machines such as
printers, small copy machines, paper shredders, and fax machines. We will also increase stock of office supplies such as paper, pens,
and staplers. With these changes, our office-supply departments will become the most profitable component of our stores."

The arguer asserts that the office-supply departments will become the most profitable component of Valu-Mart, in light of a
work-at-home trend recently, which will significantly increase the need for home office machines and so forth. However, I'm afraid this
statement is not convincing at all.

On the first place, the credibility of the survey is suspect as there is no information about the respondents. How old are they? Are they
female or male? What kind of work do they have? These factors all have an important influence on their answers to the survey. Perhaps some respondents just wanted to complain that they had too much work to do. Therefore the conclusion of the arguer that there is a work-at-home trend is not sound.

On the second place, even if nowadays people are required to take more work home with them from workplace, it can not demonstrate that there will be surge in the need of office supplies. Perhaps the work they have to bring home is only product made by hand, so they do not need any printers, small copy machines and the like. The arguer should make a further market investigation before s/he jumps to the conclusion.

Finally, assuming the increasing need for office supplies is true, the suggestion proposed by the arguer that they should increase the
stock of home office machines and office supplies to increase their profit is dubious. Anyone who has common sense knows that business is not that simple that the more commodities you have, the more money you will earn. Many respects should be taken into account,
such as the quality, the price, the popularity of the goods. And whether they can share a piece of the market is also very important to
gain the profit. Perhaps there are already some stores that have noticed the demand and taken steps to share the market.

To conclude, if the arguer really hope the office-supply departments to make a huge profit, more survey about whether there is a
work-at-home trend and whether they need new machines have to be conducted, and a investigation of what kinds of supplies is the
most popular and will sell best also should be carry out. After all, making money is not that easy.
