TOPIC: ISSUE185 - "Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
WORDS: 563          TIME: 0:45:00          DATE: 2007-2-13

Do scandals have the ability to focus attention of people to problems in special ways, as the speaker asserts? While I concede that some of the scandals really can uncover some problems of the society, politics, academia and other areas for people, however, they are useful only if being properly used and without overstated.

Scandals sometimes can show the problems which have not been discovered or even be neglected by people, and the role scandal plays can not be replaced by other means, such as giving a speech or writing a plain editorial. Consider the scandal of the Korean scientist, who did researches on embryo stem cells and faked data when he published his discovery which gains high reputation for him. This scandal causes a significant discussion in academia realm, since it mirrors the problems of morality about scientists as well as the pressure on them, which may force people to consider the framework of the science realm and the relationship between pure science and others, such as reputation. Many other scandals can illustrate this point as well. A scandal of products quality may reflect the conflicts between interests and responsibility of a company, while that of a politician gives people chance to consider the morality of a leader. Without the scandals, many problems may still be covered under the surface, and avoid the scrutiny of people all the time, even if some speakers may emphasis on them again and again.

Although some scandals have the ability to reflect some of the problems to the public, however, whether they can really do depends on the use by people. It is a common situation that most people are only interested in the scandal itself, on the propose to find some funny things in order to make the life not too boring. Such as many scandals of the stars, which only provides materials for people to chat about in leisure time. Rare people will consider the morality problems behind, aside from doing something to change the situation. Or it is even possible that some problems cannot be discovered at first glance, especially when people focus much too attention on other points.

In addition, the problems which scandals reveal may not deserve so much attention paid to them. The ability to cause intense effects is one of the characters of scandals, but sometimes, it is useless or even harmful. As the result of the intense report by media, many scandals -- such as a sexy scandal of a leader or a star -- seems like a significant problems even more important than a election itself or other public problems. Compare with a big scandal, the chief problems in the society, such as education or society security, are all fading. In this case, people may be misleaded by the scandal, and the media as well, to neglect the most important of the society, which may lead to larger problems of society.

In sum, scandals sometimes can really reveal some problems to the public, which can not be replaced by other means. But whether it can be well used depends on how people treat it, as a interesting thing only or considering it overall. And whether it deserves to be paid much attention depends on the problems it reflects. It is the responsibility of the media and public to decide which problem is more important, the scandal or other problems.

Although some scandals have the ability to reflect some of the problems to the public, however, whether they can really do depends on the use by people(这句话写得不是很漂亮). It is a common situation that most people are only interested in the scandal itself, on the propose(purpose) to find some funny things in order to make the life not too boring. Such as many scandals of the stars, which only provides materials for people to chat about in leisure time. Rare people will consider the morality problems behind, aside from doing something to change the situation. Or it is even possible that some problems cannot be discovered at first glance, especially when people focus much too attention on other points(没有论据支撑,显得有些突兀).

In addition, the problems which scandals reveal may not deserve so much attention as paid to them. The ability to cause intense effects is one of the characters of scandals, but sometimes, it is useless or even harmful. As the result of the intense report by media, many scandals -- such as a sexy scandal of a leader or a star -- seems like a significant problems even more important than a election itself or other public problems. Compared with a big scandal, the chief problems in the society, such as education or society security, are all fading. In this case, people may be misleaded(misled,我不确定是否有misleaded,最好再查一下) by the scandal, and the media as well, to neglect the most important of the society, which may lead to larger problems of society.

In sum, scandals sometimes can really reveal some problems to the public, which can not be replaced by other means. But whether it can be well used depends on how people treat it, as a(an) interesting thing only or considering it overall. And whether it deserves to be paid much attention depends on the problems it reflects. It is the responsibility of the media and public to decide which problem is more important, the scandal or other problems.

kitty_yy比较insightful, 而且有些词用的很活,很漂亮;不过如果连接词用得再活些,应该会更好.
