TOPIC: ARGUMENT51 - The following appeared in a medical newsletter.
"Doctors have long suspected that secondary infections may keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. This hypothesis has now been proved by preliminary results of a study of two groups of patients. The first group of patients, all being treated for muscle injuries by Dr. Newland, a doctor who specializes in sports medicine, took antibiotics regularly throughout their treatment. Their recuperation time was, on average, 40 percent quicker than typically expected. Patients in the second group, all being treated by Dr. Alton, a general physician, were given sugar pills, although the patients believed they were taking antibiotics. Their average recuperation time was not significantly reduced. Therefore, all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment."

In this argument, the author draws a conclusion that all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment in the consideration of secondary infections which, the author deems that, has been proved by preliminary results of a study of two groups of patients. However, there are several ill-logical flaws in the medical newsletter.
Firstly, the author compares the two experiments without detailed information which renders the effect of antibiotics unbelievable. Obviously, the two group of patients are treated by two people with different major. The ability of Dr.Alton, a physician should be suspectable in comparison to Dr. New land who specializes in sports medicine. It is quite possible that the first group of patients quicker recuperation time are due to he whole proper treatment Dr. Newland has processed other than the effect of antibiotics. Further, there is no any information about the healthy condition of two groups of patients. Probably, the first group is composed of young and strong boys while the second group is composed of old and weak women. And if the second group of patients has been treated with serious injuries compared with the first group they of course, can not heal from the injuries quickly. Meanwhile, the author fails to exclude the possibility the slow recuperation time of the second group could be due to the side-effect sugar may cause. Consequently, whether antibiotics are useful in treatment for muscle strain should be attested more particularly.
Even if antibiotics have worked effectively when people suffer from muscle strain, it is cursor to neglect other effective treatment for these injuries. What has been mentioned in second paragraph, the effect of the whole treatment should be considered seriously. As we know, the exercises taken, the psychosis state in, the food patients offered, and the frequency of treatment can influence the recuperation process of any illness and injuries to great extent. And the factor of season will slow down the speed f recuperation if it is in winter. Moreover, it is highly possible that there are pills more effective than antibiotics which have not been experimented in the study. As a consequence, to cure mental injuries it is not sagacious to rely merely on antibiotics.
Moreover, the author has provided useless information - secondary infections. I think it is his purpose to connect secondary infections and antibiotics, so he can support his conception of the function of antibiotics which can resist the negative influence of secondary infections. But not only does the speaker fail to found the connection, but also he was caught in the spider web that whether the study of the two group of patients should be used to prove the influence of secondary infection or to testify the function of antibiotics. Therefore, both conclusions of the secondary infections and antibiotics have been weaken without the support of the study.
To sum up, the author fails to persuade us to take the suggestion to take antibiotics as part of treatment for muscle strain without detailed data about the study and convincing relevance between secondary infections and antibiotics.
