Whether non-mainstream areas of inquiry play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs? It is undeniable that astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits do have somewhat influence in the satisfying people's need, whereas, it is the mainstream science that plays the vital role in the society to meet human needs and prosper the development of the human society and human civilization.

Non-mainstream areas of inquiry have some benefits on making people satisfied. People usually obtain comfort from it. In ancient times, people lead severe lives and they usually suffer from the many tough difficulties, such as poor living conditions, food shortage and natural disasters. In these circumstances, for the sake of alleviating the sorrows people undertake they have to turn to non-mainstream areas of inquiry and satisfy their psychological needs. Likewise, in the modern era, people are fond of fortune-telling. The flattering remarks always make people happy and they, to some extents, can make people more optimistic and confident.

However, non-mainstream areas of inquiry have more of a negative than a positive effect on the society. Superstition ignorance even evil are usually closely connected to non-mainstream areas inquiry. And if non-mainstream areas of inquiry develop with out appropriate instructions, it usually does harm to the society and threaten the safety of citizen's lives. The cult, based on non-mainstream areas of inquiry, such as Falun Gong in China, is an evil organization which misleads ignorant people by spreading superstitious beliefs and instigates some illegal activities such as gathering people to upset the public order and suicidal burning in Tian`anmen Square. All of these activities have negative effects on social stability and the safety of citizens.   

In fact, it is the mainstream science that plays a vital role in society in enlightening people with abundant knowledge and accelerating the development of the human civilization. Mainstream science, which is based on the objective observation to the world, usually reflects the world naturally without distortion. During the course of pursuing the truth of the nature world, scientists engage themselves in their researches and conclude their theories after numerous times of experiments. Mendel, for instance, who is named as the Father of Genetics, carried out a large sum of experiences and he recorded more than 21000 samples on the research of genetics. After years of hard working, he put forward the theories of heredity which indicate the inherent principle of genetics. One the contrary, non－mainstream areas of inquiry are usually based on false observation and mislead people with incorrect theories and hypothesis.

To sum up, we have to observe the contribution of non－mainstream areas of inquiry objectively. Although the comfort and the feeling of satisfaction brought by non－mainstream areas of inquiry can benefit people, it has more bad effects on the society. And we should realize that the mainstream science is the ultimate factor which satisfies human needs and plays the vital role in the development of human civilization.
