48. "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."

I agree with the author’s assertion that general population contributed a lot in the significant events in the history. However, in different profession and under different circumstances, the function of individuals and general people are different and their importance are depends on the events. In my opinion, we cannot only put emphasize on individuals or general population.

In political field, the famous few tend to be more important than the last majority. Without a leadergather the other people together, the other people cannot act in the same pace, which especially in revolution. For example, Abraham Lincoln launched the Civil War which restored the Union and in the process helped to quicken the America’s transformation into a modern nation. In another case, Martin Luther King provided a candle along with the light to all black Americans. In China, Xiaoping Deng, who was the famous leader, put forward the famous theory：one country, two system, which made the final regression of Hong Kong. Meanwhile, the power of general groups is the foundation of the final success.

In academic field, the success of the scientific invention is always the result of several people’s hard work. When we mention the invention of the plane, the name first comes to people’s mind is the Wright brother. However, a lot of endeavor contributed to the last achievement. Homer was famous for two great works, the Iliad and the Odyssey, nevertheless the great works were not written by him alone, to be more accurate, what he did most was the addition and modification on the basis of the others. However, many famous works, no matter literature or painting, accomplished by only few people. Like the famous painting Mona Lisa was Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece.

In economic field, economy stable need the effort of all people. If people are no longer confident with nation’s ability to control the national economy, the society would come into chaos. But some people are crucial in economic development. Famous economist Adam Smith advocates the idea of competition impelling the development of the society. In his theory, law rate of unemployment, which will lead to positive competition and the increase of the productivity, is motivating force for the economy for any society.

Both individual and general people play different role in the different events in the history. Neither of them should be ignored or magnified. Without the effort of each part, the society cannot make a progress.
