According to the latest info, Cornell had sent out rejection letters bdofre 02/04/2007!
I am so afraid that I am in the pool of those applications who could not be given offer!

根据我所知道的，Duke经济系的Ph.D项目在过去的两年中根本就没直接录取过大陆学生。只有Master项目录取过。由于scale的关系Duke经济系排名不特别高，可很精悍，并不比Maryland,U Mich那样的系声誉差。
我看到以前的帖子里讨论了Henry的推荐。在某些学校可能很有用（比如Cornell).可Henry不是Lucas, right?不是每个学校（特别是Duke这样级别的）的committee都认的。

Acutually, Henry wrote a LORs for the student from PKU, who got offer from UMN and rej. by  Cornell!

so, the process of admission is a process with uncertainty!

That guy might use different LORs for each school. A professor in USA could not write too many letters.

康奈尔没有发完所有的拒信，econphd上很多人都是自己发email或者打电话问来的拒信。至于杜克没怎么收国内的本科生我不确定，也许牛牛们不去杜克了。。the point is, i think, an undergraduate individual's variance is huge if hes from any school in china, or any public school in north america (including berkeley). 如果私立牛校出来的是牛人的可能性就大多了。。。比如一个ivy的小本科可能不会选择申请杜克根本

People keep saying that the admissions process is very stochastic, but I think it is to some degree but meanwhile it has to stick to certain criteria.  Applicants from People’s U do have some advantages over ones from other unknown schools in China. But still as my senior supervise, who graduated from Berkeley and is now working as an associate editor in two top ranked journals, told me that there are many lousy Ph.D. graduates from top ranked US schools, eg, someone under the supervision of David Card.

Personally, I had 2 classmates from People’s U in my MA studies. They (1 MA and 1 BA) were just performing ok in the class; only those from Nankai finance and Wuhan econ were doing great. But in terms of graduate admissions, believe or not People’s U does rank among tops in econ category.

Again, whether or not you are offered admission with aids depends on your GPA, courses taken, papers & TA exp and Rec letters. Of course weighting schemes vary by school.
