The speaker claims that artists rather than critics give something immortally valuable to the society. I concede that there would be no art, let alone its great contribution to the society without many great artists, and that critics are sometimes likely to impede the originality and the passion of the artists. However, in my view, the speaker overlooks the positive effect of critics. In many cases artists are a catalyst for the arts' development and a filter of artworks.

I strongly agree that it is the artists who initially create art works of lasting value. Real excellent artists do not need critics to exert their talent and apply to the art works their inner psychological world and their views about the society. We should look no further than the great Spain architect Gaudi that strongly attracts almost everyone at every corner of the world. We cannot say that without critics, Gaudi would have been not able to design Casa Mila, the church of Sagrada Familia and many his other works. Actually, it is his own talent and abilities, such as his unique insights to the structures of nature and human beings and his outstanding understanding in physical principles that bring such a great work to the society. Thus we can see it is artists themselves, who create artworks that found the value of art.

In addition, I admit that critics might sometimes impede the creativity of the artists and the development of art, especially when it comes to the fallow artists and the establishment of new genre of art. For example, when a fallow artist has done a work that is breaks the convention but has potential aesthetic uniqueness, the hard blow from the critics can afflict this artist's passion, and he might turn to compromise to the convention, thus a potential value is lost.

However, in my view, critics also contribute a lot to the realm of arts. First, it is usually the excellent critics that understand some works obscure to the mass and convey the thoughts of artists to the world. Take Gaudi again as an example. It is known that Gaudi's work is of very unique structures that have no precedents in the world. Without someone to study and analyze, Gaudi's thoughts and designing approaches would be very hard to understand and thus arouse in the mass less interests and less willing to protect. Yet after it was informed by the critics that his distinction is strongly related to nature and human beings, such as the structure of trees, waves, skeletons, the surprising value of Gaudi’s work began to spread, and aroused the awareness of relationship between the nature, human beings and the architectures, thus promoted the societal harmony.

Second, it is mainly because of critics that the real excellent works are separated from those bad ones and that the mass are not misled. Every stage of the development of the art would be crammed by many artworks of various qualities, ideas and values. Without someone to praise and criticize on them, the valuable ones might not be acknowledged and the backward ones might dominate the field of arts. We can look into a proper example of today. Behavior arts are now flourishing on its way, yet this kind of arts arouses plenty of contradictions because of their odd ways of expressing. Among all the behavior artworks, there are some valuable ones that connote deep thoughts in terms of the nature, humanity, social problems, etc. The critics tend to distinct these artworks from the ones that convey unhealthy, antisocial, and anthropologic ideas, thus to some extent warrant that the mass are not misled, and keep the development of art in a rising up trend

In sum, it is fundamentally the artists that bring lasting value to the society, and admittedly impact of the critics might be sometimes negative. However, in my view, it is unfair to overlook the critics’ positive effects, which make the world understand the valuable artworks, pervade the important idea of the artworks, and warrant the healthy development of the arts.
