65The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.

"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

1it is not sure that the cheeses in the newest store were welcome because they are better than others.
2The reliability of the survey
3 The mainly source of profits may not be domestic cheeses

In the memo the arguer suggested not continuing to stock imported cheese to improve profits in all their stores throughout the United States. To bolster the argument, it is listed a fact and a survey as the proof. A close scrutiny of them reveals the argument unconvincing.

In the first place, it is not sure that the domestic cheeses are best-selling throughout the nation. The arguer merely cites the fact that five best-selling cheeses at their newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses. Is it still the case as for the whole nation? It is possible that this newest store discount part of its commodities to raise the sells, which, as we all know, is fairly common for new stores. It is also possible that the residents near the store have a different taste compared with the other clients in other places. Maybe the domestic cheeses are favorite for people in this city, while in all the other cities imported cheeses are preferred. Without ruling out these possibilities, the arguer can not convince me that people throughout the nation prefer domestic cheeses.

In the second place, the reliability of the survey cited by the arguer to support an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers is doubtful. There is no information about the details of the survey. Is the amount of subscribes large enough to render the survey meaningful at statistic level? It is possible that the respondents of the survey are coincidentally all fond of domestic cheeses because the amount of subscribes is too small. It is also possible that the survey has some inductive questions. It is possible that the surveyors prepare domestic cheeses for respondents to have a taste, while there are no imported cheeses prepared. Without the details of the survey, I can not simply accept the result of it.

Finally, highest sale does not necessarily lead to highest profits. Even if the sale of domestic cheeses is high, it is possible that the profit of each cheese is much smaller than the imported cheeses. For example, if every single domestic cheese brings about 1 dollar profit, while it is 2 dollars as for every imported cheese. Then, even if the company sells two thousand domestic cheeses, which is five hundred more than imported cheeses, the profit of domestic cheeses will be two thousand dollars, while that of imported cheeses can be three thousand dollars. In this case, the arguer can not simply conclude that the profit of domestic cheeses are higher than that of imported cheeses.

To sum up, the arguer bases the suggestion on two dubious proves and draws the conclusion by a arbitrary reasoning, which makes the argument impeachable as it stands.

看了你这一段,我觉得我的那个调查写的很不透彻,学习中
