TOPIC: ISSUE51 - "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
Should education designed specifically to meet the individual needs and interests of each students? The speaker claims that education will be truly effective only when it is particularly designed to satisfy the demands and interests of every individual. From my perspective, it is true that education which aims at students' interests is helpful during the process of study; however, the disadvantages of the education concerning interests only outweigh the benefits.
Admittedly, students can learn a certain subject more efficiently with the stimulus of interests. In the artistic realm, a good example is Mozart, one of the greatest and prolific musicians in the history. Mozart’s father found his son was fascinating with melody when he was only five years old, then father hired a tutor to instruct Mozart music technically. Obviously, the splendid and outstanding contribution to the musical area of Mozart is to a large extent thanks to the instruction specifically in accordance with his own fancy with music. From that case, we can clearly see that interest is a finer teacher of students which accelerate them to learn knowledge with more remarkable effects.
However, on the other hand, short-lived interests are not sufficient for the learning of students. As we know, interests are quite transitory and changeful for students—especially for the low-level students—which makes them unauthentic to be the only consideration when designing the education. What is more, it is necessary for students to learn certain fundamental subjects whether students are interested in or not, such as basic mathematics, languages, science, and so forth. Take the education of mathematics in China for an example. It is a required course for every student in elementary school and middle school as well, students have to learn a multitude of formulas and rules of mathematics regardless of the baldness and difficulty of them. Consequently, students from China have an average excellent ability in computing and accounting, which is beneficial for them to pursue the further education with respect to the high-level mathematics, construction, engineering, etc. In short, interest in just one factor of education rather than the only one.
In addition, students require more other than interests on the road of learning. For instance, they need guidance from teachers and cooperation from schoolmates, in which they can understand the knowledge as well as teamwork more effectively. Moreover, interests are not innate for students; it is quite possible that a student will find it entertaining after a long time research with the help of teachers. Hence, education relevant to interests only will sometimes adverse to the development of potential skills of students in the future.
All in all, in my point of view, although it is helpful to design education under the direction of interests and needs of students; however, the negative effects preponderate over the benefits. Without the proper instruction, teamwork and the essential knowledge of several curricula, it is difficult for students who hold nothing but inconstant interests to succeed in many areas.
