TOPIC: ARGUMENT13 - The following appeared in a memo from the chief executive of a video game company.

"We have recently been offered the opportunity to buy the rights to produce a video game based on the soon-to-be-published children's book "Squirrel Power," by Peter Wood. While the cost of the rights is substantial and will place economic constraints on our company in the short-term, there are two reasons that the purchase of these rights will undoubtedly be a wise investment. First, Wood's last three books have been best sellers and the movie based on his first book was highly profitable. Second, the popular characters and story line in "Squirrel Power" will save us time in developing our video game, thereby reducing our costs."

The author of the memo draws a conclusion that the video game company should purchase the rights of the 'Squirrel Power' in order to gain high profits despite of the high expenditure on the authorization. This astonishing recommendation is based on several steps of logical confusing inferences, which I will discuss in the following details.

To begin with, the previous success of the three books of the Peter Wood cannot predict the future of the coming 'Squirrel Power'. Entirely possible, these three books were published decades ago, and the tastes of the children readers today have greatly changed compared with those in the old days. This may lead the sales of the 'Squirrel Power' in a predicament. Or perhaps, the past three books are other in other types, such as imagination, detective or so forth. 'Squirrel Power' may be the author's first try in the realm of naive tales, which highly probably is a fledging books that may not sell well. Failing to consider such possibilities, the author cannot assert that 'Squirrel Power' will still succeed.

Even if the 'Squirrel Power' is as welcome as these three books, the success of the books or even the popularity of the movie adapted from the books cannot permit the future of the video game based on the book. In terms of a video game, there are many other significant factors should be taken into deliberation, such the graphic, the requirements of the hardware, the controlling system or so forth, which fundamentally differs from the direction work of a film. Hence the assertion the assertion that the costs of the development of the game will be reduced due to the extant characters and story lines are unsounded for there are still many tasks of the company. Moreover, any mistake in each step of the process of the video gaming will make it a complete failure, in spite of the excellent inspiration of the books. Therefore, unless the professional ability of the video game company in such fields is acceptable, whether the game will be a popular one or the costs will decrease should still be under discussion.

Granted that the video game based on the book will be popular, the author may still overstate the benefits from this purchase regardless of other disadvantages brought about by this action. The author has already admitted himself that this purchase will place economic constraints on the company in the short-term, so that it is highly probably the developments of other directions of the company will be seriously limited, which may be the primary income resource of the company. What is more, if the game occupied most budgets and the labor resource of the company but it still calls for a long time to complete the game, the temporary constraints of the company's economy may turn into a long-term trouble, for the investments on the single game cannot be get back immediately, which is the worst situation in the field of business. Consequentially, the author's suggestion cannot be accepted unless further investigation has been conducted.

In summary, the author fails to convince me the recommendation may bring the company sums of profits rather than turmoil.
