TOPIC: ARGUMENT53 - Thirteen years ago, researchers studied a group of 25 infants who showed signs of mild distress when exposed to unfamiliar stimuli such as an unusual odor or a tape recording of an unknown voice. They discovered that these infants were more likely than other infants to have been conceived in early autumn, a time when their mothers' production of melatonin-a hormone known to affect some brain functions-would naturally increase in response to decreased daylight. In a follow-up study conducted earlier this year, more than half of these children-now teenagers-who had shown signs of distress identified themselves as shy. Clearly, increased levels of melatonin before birth cause shyness during infancy and this shyness continues into later life.

The author draws an astonishing conclusion that the shyness of people in future life is caused by the daylight changes when their mothers was pregnant and unfamiliar circumstances when they were infants. In the following I will discuss each step of the logical confusing inferences.
To begin with, information of the most essential time when one's character is developed--that is his childhood, is not provided by us. Experiences, such as failure in the courses in schools, or the mayhem in the children's family will probably form the teenagers’ characters into a shy direction. Moreover, the shyness is even succeeded by the teenagers' parents, according to the theory of the modern medical system. Therefore, simply assert some efforts in infant times could lead to a future depress regard other numerous possibilities is premature.
Furthermore, even if the growths of these observed children are as common as other children, and their parents do not suffer from the characters of shyness, as we know, pregnant women often stay at homes and seldom go out in the early morning and late dawn, in which the sunlight is limited in autumn. In such case, the decreasing sunshine time caused by the season changes obviously will not affect those pregnant women body, so that the increasing production of melatonin will not exist. Given that the trend does exist, no evidence is show to prove that the melatonin is the reason of later shy character. Other factors, such as the abuse of the drugs in pregnant time, or the emotional pressure of the pregnant mother may probably bring the babies several kinds of bad influences, maybe the future shyness included. Without ruling out such alternatives, the author's theory remains unsounded.
Even those children are really victims of melatonin, a sample of only 25 infants in the study is too limited to convince me that the result is a convincing regulation rather than a coincident. It is entirely possible that those infants are of the same race, and theory which is correct of this human race may not fit other kinds of human race. A regulation should be established with sufficient participants, which should cover all kinds of human, of the study, and the enough time, may be times passed generations. Without these factors, the results of the study should not be accepted.
In summary, the author fails to provide us a proper scientific theory. |
