TOPIC: ARGUMENT186 - The following is arecommendation from the director of personnel to the president of ProfessionalPrinting Company.
"In a recent telephone survey ofautomobile factory workers, older employees were less likely to report thathaving a supervisor present increases their productivity. Among workers aged 18to 29, 27 percent said that they are more productive in the presence of theirimmediate supervisor, compared to 12 percent for those aged 30 or over, andonly 8 percent for those aged 50 or over. Clearly, if our printing companyhires mainly older employees, we will increase productivity and save moneybecause of the reduced need for supervisors."

Relying on a telephone survey recently, theauthor concludes that company will increase productivity and save money if themhires more older employees. However, I cannot agree with author's assertion asfollows.
In the first place, the author inadequatelyinvokes the survey of automobile factory to illustrate his conclusion in theprinting industry. In the view of huge difference between the two factories maygreatly influence author's recommendation. Perhaps that many young works useautomobile conveniently to call their friends during the absence of supervisors.Automobile company, which products mobile specially, provides convenience forits workers, especially young ones, to use these products. Contrarily, works, who are working in printing company, dose not have such a qualification thatthey don't have such an opportunity to have laze during their work time. So,author's conclusion is questioned due to the difference between these twocorporations.
Secondly, grant this investigation can betransplanted to printing company, author have no evidence to show that workerfrom 18 to 29 and those aged 30 and over have low productivity than old ones.Author show the information that worker, those who younger than 50, are moreefficient in the presence of their immediate supervisors. Unfortunately, theseinformation are inadequately. Maybe young worker have higher productive thanold ones at any times, even when their supervisors are absent. In brief, author’sconclusion depend on these evidence cannot convince us.
Last but not least, author fail to takeinto account the fact that young worker have ability to know informationquickly than old workers. As we know, nowadays, technology is developing fasterand people can obtain much more information from Internet than before. We haveto query that whether old workers can keep step with this situation. Obviously, though printing is easy for technology side, workers, aged over 50, hardly havecapability to equal with younger workers that use the latest technology andskills on job. Thus, we should not hire more old workers due to the fact thatthey cannot learn technology as fast as young ones.
To draw a conclusion, author cannotconvince us because of the flaws of information of survey and condition of twocompanies. To better buttress up it, author has to rectify the fallacies andprovide more evidence about is, such as how the investigation is conducted, orthe exact productivity condition between the younger and older ones. |
