When considering the debate whether problems we confront nowadays are more complex and challenging than those faced by our predecessors, I tend to contend that it is true that we are facing more challenging problems. However, at the same time, we are grasping more knowledge and sharing more effective apparatus, which help us solve what we face.

When we listen to what people complain of, we find that it is true that the contemporary life is much more complex and challenging for people. We would rather lead a peaceful life as people once did long ago. As we all know, the environment we are living in are much more seriously polluted than ever before. We are bearing continuous noise wherever we are. We are suffering from air pollution whatever we do. We are also risking more illness minute by minute. All of these are putting our health in a tough condition. What is more, the tremendous burden of working assignments are driving us suffer from mental disease more commonly. The large population makes the competition more brutal than ever before, which forces us make every effort to earn a easier life. Every person is complaining about these every day, which pricks up the disappointment for everyone.

However, we fail to see that modern society has provides us much more to solve problems we face. Therefore, in practice, problems we meet are not so terrible as they were in the past.

In the first place, although knowledge accumulated by generations of people is too large a storage for us to study, subjects have already been divided so that we shall research in a relatively narrow area. Even those generalists have no need to grasp all subjects while they are just demanded to connect different subjects together. For example, for a biologist experimenting in a laboratory, it is no longer all his assignments to accomplish every single step in the experiment. If he requires a two milliliter of genes of certain mice, he no longer needs to make it all by himself, which demand accurate skills. He can just purchase what he wants from certain company which is executing such skills for a living instead of learning how to make it himself. One never needs to learn all subjects as what is done before because of such narrower subject dividing.

What is more, the advanced technique has provided us plenty of effective apparatus to facilitate the process of solving problems. We can solve much more difficult problems in a shorter time. Take the problem of analyzing amino acid sequence of protein for an example. The first one who achieved the goal spent ten years on the single assignment while today we need just ten minutes with the help of mass spectrometry. We are endowed with much more effective and effort-saving apparatus in the modern society than we are just ten years ago.

To sum up, while complaining of difficult problems we are facing in the modern society, we should also set eyes on what we have obtained. We are demanded in narrower area than before, which has lightened our burden. We are also provided more effective apparatus, which assists us more potently than ever before. We should treat our lives objectively as well as optimistically.
