TOPIC: ARGUMENT9 - The following appeared in a memorandum from a dean at Omega University.
"Fifteen years ago, Omega University implemented a new procedure that encouraged students to evaluate the teaching
effectiveness of all their professors. Since that time, Omega professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes,
and overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by thirty percent. Potential employers apparently believe the grades
at Omega are inflated; this would explain why Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates
from nearby Alpha University. To enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should now terminate student
evaluation of professors."

The arguer try to convince us that Omega University should now terminate student evaluation of professors, in order to secure better jobs for its graduates. The major assumptions underlying the argument are that potential employers totally believe the grades at Omega University are unreliable and for this reason the graduates from Omega University fail to get the better job from the potential employers. However, this argument suffers from several critical fallacies which might seriously undermine this argument.
To begin with, the arguer fails to provide sufficient evidences which prove student evaluation of professors is the key reason that graduates perform poorly in the job market. First, there is no sound evidences that potential employers "apparently" believe the grades at Omega are inflated and take this factor as a key point when recruiting . Is there any surveys, studies, or investigations on this issue? Since no such information provided in the argument, how could the arguer confidently make the claim that the potential employers apparently believe it? Second , there might be many reasons why graduates from Alpha University have been more successful at getting jobs. Significantly, the excellent morality and personal character, the well-rounded abilities, the education quality and the social resources are all the essential points for the graduates when they are applying for a job, and especially the graduates from Alpha University might have enormous advantages, compared with graduates from Omega University.
On the other hand, even if the employers "apparently" believe the grades at Omega are inflated, it is still really hard for the graduates to get a job ,when Omega University only terminate student evaluation of professors without more strategies and policies, since there must be so many reasons. Moreover, not only the college education and campus activities ,but also job market recommendation programs and public relations extension should Omega University definitely improve , which are the very methods to promote the graduates to get better job , rather than to terminate the student evaluation of professors.
To sum up, the conclusion lacks credibility because the evidence cited in the analysis does not substantially support what the arguer claims. To strengthen the argument , the arguer would have to provide more evidence that the potential employers are concerned about the inflated grades in Omega University ,which is a key important point they focus on. Further more , to better evaluate this argument , we would need more information regarding the Omega University and Alpha University. |
