Do technologies not only influence but determine social customs and ethics, as the speaker claims? In my observation, technologies undoubtedly have great effect on social customs and ethics. Nevertheless, I disagree with the statement that both social customs and ethics are decided by technologies, for the reason that such technologies are created by human being who are always influenced by those social customs and ethics.

First, Technologies play a crucial role in changing some social customs such as rights of women, way of learning and mean of communication. For example, after industrial evolution, women could do the same works as men. They can supply themselves and don't need to depend on wage of husbands. As a result, social statue of  women was promoted considerably. Besides, t computer revolution and occurrence of internet change our traditional way of  acquiring and assimilating  knowledge. Compared with bald content from textbook, those students are interested in such new and effective mean of learning. Thanks to mobile telephone, people can communicate with others who are far from them instead of writing a letter and waiting some months. Accordingly, such technologies have change our certain traditional customs.

In addition, technologies have great effect on ethics as well as social customs. An apt illustration of this viewpoint evolves the research of genetics. Through the discovery of genetics, people who have the same predecessors must not marriage each other. For the reason that the offspring of marriage always suffer from some illness when they are born. Understanding such harmful results, the masses find the traditional theory of intermarriage wrong or even dangerous. As a result, people discard their old ethical and establish new standard for selecting their mates.

Though those technologies play an important role in change social customs and ethics, it does not necessarily mean that technologies can ultimately determine social customs and ethics. Contrarily, such technologies serves to human being and meet the populace's need. And social customs and ethical is part and parcel of our demands. That is to say, those technologies actually hinges on our social customs and ethical to some extent. For instance, the research on cloning is regarded as unethical and immoral. Most of nation allege that such research should be prohibited. Another remarkable example is Nuclear weapon. As a common sense, such weapons are only used for human slaughter conflicting with human ethical and customs. Thus, Nuke have been not allowed researched and produced for protecting ourselves and the world around us. Apparently, whether some technologies be explored and used are determined by standard of ethical and customs.

In sum, technologies bring about a series of change of social customs as well as ethics. However, those technologies always made by human to cater to some social customs and ethics. Accordingly, such technologies are determined by social customs and ethics.
