Issue36. The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.
I concede, sometimes, that the greatness of individuals can not be realized by their contemporaries, as is shown in mankind history. However, there also have some other cases that the achievements of some giants are admitted by their contemporaries or brought some controversial arguments.
I agree with the statement insofar that the achievements of some giants can not be admitted by their contemporaries, because their works are too abstracted for their contemporaries to accept, or it takes time for the achievements to make their contribution. Take the great artist Vincent Van Gogh as an example; he was poor and anonymous during his life, and died in poverty, he got no admission in his time and just sold one painting. However, his paintings get the highest bids in auctions and he is honored one of the greatest painters of history after his death. As in scientific areas, some theories can only be confirmed by theorists many years after the theory was made, because the limitation of scientific condition. For example, the theory of Realistic; when the theory was purposed, few people of the world can understand the meaning of it, and this theory cannot be confirmed empirically. Until thirty years later, it was confirmed by astronomers.
However, most of the time, the achievements of the giants are admitted by both their contemporaries and the people live after them. For instance, the ex-premier of England, Sir Winston Churchill, one of the most hardest man fighting with the Nazis in World War Two. His speeches and actions during the war have encouraged millions of people all over the world to walk out the darkness of the war, and give them faith to live. He also gets respects from people after his death. Another example of the great musician Mozart. He past away when he was young. However, his brilliant works have been playing and performing all over the world and he got the honor and admission by people of different times, including his own time. In the realm of business, the great achievements get admission by people immediately. The search engine Google makes the information searching more convenient and effective; it has greatly changed our lives, and it also gets recognized by people who are using internet all over the world.
In sum, the speaker overlooks that many greatness of individuals have already got admission by their contemporaries. However, some achievements of giants can only be recognized by people who live after them. |
