On whether the study of history has values only to the extent that it is related to our everyday lives, the author give an positive view. But I can hardly completely accept such assertion, because the study of history benefits in diverse aspects, both relevant to daily lives and some other cases.

Admittedly, the study of history do have values when it is relevant to our everyday lives. The study of history provides us with aesthetic enjoyment and entertainment. By reading an amazing book or watching a movie about history stories, we get to know what ancient people do and think in the past, and more or less obtain some sense of beauty and excitement even a brand new view on our own lives and society. Take the American movie Troy for example, when watching it, I was totally shocked by the grand scene of the battle and the unique bravery of Achilles, how bravely he fought, how fiercely he loved, honestly, I have really tasted something called aesthetics, which is included in the physical and mental strength of human. This is part of what the study of history can offer us, the mental enjoyment and better understanding about beauty.

Not only can the learning of history offer us such feeling on beauty, it may also give us a hand on going through daily difficulties. Unavoidably, everyone will be confronted by some difficulties or even failure through their lives, and at such moment, what they have learned from history may help a lot by offering us diverse mental value. A friend of mine has once got so frustrated from the lose of an important examination that he got immersed in the doubt about his ability and afraid to start again, however, after he read the story about Napoleon, he immediately get rid of such frustration and determined to keep struggling to achieve success. “The real honor is not to never fail, but to keep trying until succeed and never give up” , he once said, “That is what Napoleon has taught me”. The mental characters of our ancients may give us countless strength and power.

Nevertheless, this is not to say that the study of history has little values when it is not so related with our daily lives. Oppositely, it may benefit us more on other broad aspects. First, the study of history can give lessons to our society from problems and mistakes in the past and warn us avoiding repeating them. If something we are doing or attend to do has ever happened in history and was proved little beneficial or even harmful to our society, then we may take a further research and analysis on this plan and may find some inner mistakes in it, thus earlier stop it and prevent from suffering more waste and expense. On the contrary, however, if we neglect the study of history and keep on, our society may suffer from the same or even worse destiny of our ancestors in history. Maya civilization, which has create great science and culture in distant ages, but was finally destroyed by their neglect of environmental protection, is a good example telling our modernists how significant it is to protect the environment around. Therefore, history seems like a mirror for our society to be aware of some errors that can be easily made without seriously considering.

Still, learning history can help human maintain and develop their culture. History is the record of people and events in the past, which are all the carriers of the traditional culture. Without keeping all those records passing by generations, many cultures long long ago may easily disappear, resulting in the lack of variety of cultures in the world today. Worth still, because cultures largely open people’s minds and hearts, lacking the support of culture, people may even suffer from mental frustration, which in turn will terribly affect the survival and flourish of the society.

In sum, the study of history benefits us not only when it is relevant to our daily lives, but also in terms of its function in guiding our thoughts and behaviors and protect our culture from extinct. And those are all values of the learning of history, which we should appreciate and never stop utilizing.
