It is impossible for an effective political leader to tell the truth all the time. Complete honesty is not a useful virtue for a political.

Is totally honesty helpless to the political as the speaker asserted? Or should the political leader tell the lie to the public? I basically agree that it is not necessary for a political leader to tell the truth all the time. However in my opinion, to be honesty also has some advantage and if political leaders lie to public with their own purposes, it will harm the society.

The chief reason why honesty is helpful to the society is that telling the truth to the public can make citizens know what have happened, and promote them to feed back their views. In all political system, political leaders not represent their own, but his country and the civilian. If a leader does not care the notion of civilian, he or she may no longer keep the position. Only being known what things have happen in the country, civilian can speared their views and leader can understand the view of citizens exactly. In that way, an outstanding leader can manager his country efficiently. Besides, being apprized the truth, whatever good or bad, civilian feel that their rights are reserved and would like to give more confidence to the governors. Without being doubted, the measures established by the leader will be promoted much efficiently and the society may be stable as well. The truths help political leader to be respectful and efficient.

However, in some condition, the truth may trouble the stability of society. For example, as the terrorism existing in our world. After 911, the terrorism is considered the main threat of global peace. Many countries upgrade their security level, while the terrorists still appear constantly. In this special background, the situation may often happen that the security departments have obtained the exact information about the potential terror, but the government publishes nothing of the cases. People may be curious that why government only arises the security level, but political leaders do not tell the truth this time? Several reasons may be considered. First, the civilian may fear for the unhappening terror and cause a disturbance in society. Second, the terrorist may learn the action of security departments and alter their plans. Considered both of the consequences take negative effect on public, thus it is reasonable for the political leads keep silence in the cases. After all, if the political leaders do not tell the truth just for the profits of public, the silence or the lie probably take positive effect on society.

In the other hand, some political leaders lie for their own profits; the lie will surely damage the society. There are so many dishonest scandals in politics. Such as Watergate, the fuse of this event is an occasionally break-in which  revealed White House’s plan of espionage against political opponents. Though being doubted by public, President Nixon refused to take tapes which record all conversations in White House and feigned knowing nothing. Soon his dishonesty was proved by a special investigation and result in his resignation of president. His cheating movement but only disturbed the fairness of election, but also damaged the profits of public. And purpose of the dishonesty is only for his career of politics. Such lies as this could be considered as natural or an efficient to manage country and should be condemned.

In sum, dishonesty may also be a threat of society, while honesty may benefit to public. Because honesty or dishonesty itself can not be judge as angel or evil, but the purpose of those behaviors can reveal efficient political leaders or doubtful leaders.
