I agree with the speaker that the study has value only to the extent that is relevant to our daily life. However, It is hard to define the concept of "relevant to our life", since our life always relates to so various fields that almost all we study will have some kind of relationship with our daily life.
First of all, when we study history, we may learn from the great people, especially their moral characters to guide us in our daily life. Some people may claim that time has been changing all the time; the study of history is of no sense. However, even though we lead a totally diverse life now, the characters that are required to success or overcome difficulties in working, living, and the like may stay the same. For example, Wellington, a famous general in history, was defeated by Napoléon in a battle. He was upset and almost lost his heart; however, at this critical moment of his life, he recollected his spirit when seeing a spider never giving up to mend his net in a fierce storm. Finally, he beat Napoléon in Waterloo campaign. Although Wellington lived several hundreds ago and perhaps none of us would have the some experience like him, we still can learn from him that no matter what we may meet or suffer, we should maintain hope and never give up to pursue what we desire. In that case, we are more likely to achieve the goals we set for ourselves. This is just one lesson that the history teaches us. The story may be out of date, but the spirit will never fade away.
Secondly, the history will alert us on the crisis that is similar with what we face today. For example, once there was prosperous city in the northwest part of China called Loulan. However, it disappeared suddenly in the area, which became a mystery in history. Recent study shows that the reason for the disappearance was due to explode of population and destruction of environment, which is rather similar to the situation we face today. The study of history of this kind provides us with vivid lessons that force us to evalue the decision we make today so that we will have a clear picture for the results that we may have in the future.
Lastly, aside from the moral encouragement and lessons we can draw from the study of history, some study of history that seem to be irrelevant to our lives can affect our life in a indirect way. For example, in China some people may say that the study of history thousands of years ago, such as the project of judging the exact year when the dynasty Zhou was founded, is useless in that it provides nothing but a meaningless number. However, considering the formation and development of one culture, it is responsible for us to learn our own history. Thus, we are more like to form a reorganization of our culture and increase the proud for our long history and culture, which will be conducive to the unification of the whole country.
In sum, the study of history will supply us with lessons that affect our mind, or attitudes towards the situation we have today. I hold that all we have today is of some kind of relationship with the past. From this view, learning history will ultimately guide our daily activities to some extent.
