题目:ISSUE147 - "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
字数:385 用时:0:45:00 日期:2007-3-23
Whether tradition and modernization are compatible? The speaker claims that they are not compatible, and then we must choose between them. I fundamentally tend to agree with the assertion for the reason that in some cases, there are serious conflicts between them which are result from the development of society and science. However, in my view, we should accommodate them to make full use of them to help human being advance.
It is true that the assertion is clearly accurate in that there are such many examples to testify the assertion. For supporting example, one needs look no further than the development of physics science. Before the Einstein discovered relativity theory, viewed as modernization in that times, which was not conform to the classical Newton mechanical theory, even was adverse, most of physicists had adhered to Newton mechanical theory. There were serious conflicts between Newton and Einstein, which were incompatible in the discussion of physicists so that eventually people realized the correction of relative theory, which have helped us develop our society and science. Hence, in some cases there is collision between tradition and modernization.
Moreover, it is widely acknowledged that, to some extend, that the customs of tradition and modernization will encounter, even result in conflicts.
Our society is filled with the examples. For example, in the ancient times, the customs of people's dressing, which was monotone and conformity, is different from nowadays which is full of various dressing and people can freely choose. Thus, there exist conflicts between traditional and modern dressing, so that people should choose one of them to plume themselves.
Under some circumstances, nevertheless, it can be counterproductive, in a large sense, to overemphasize that tradition and modernization are not compatible. Common sense teaches us, for instance, that it is a mistake to attempt to dissociate them, regarding to the benefit to human being. Traditional good morality exist continuously from ancient time to nowadays, which is conform to part of modern morality and give us many benefits for civilization of human being and development of science and technology. Thus, we can not emphasize the importance of compatibility between tradition and modernization too much.
In sum, there is little doubt that tradition and modernization are not compatible so that one of them must be chosen. Obviously, we should make full use of the intercommunity of the tradition and modernization. |
