TOPIC: ISSUE120 - "So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little

guidance for living in the present."

Though the understanding of the past is not relevant to our daily life and so much is new and complex today, it also can provides guidance for living in the present.

First, it promotes the development of our society to explore the nature. Just think that if the Wright brothers did not think about how the bird can fly, they won't invent the first heavier than air flying machine, what we now know as the aeroplane, and it is difficult to image what the vision of the world will be, and how can we fly in the air freely as we do today? Moreover, if we do not investigate the laws of the ocean, how can we forecast the tsunami to protect ourselves. Otherwise, if we do not study why the sun rises from the east and falls to the west, when we will know the world is not even but rotund? In short, for as much as the researches of the nature, man invents a lot of things and benefits our society.

Secondly, in the course of investigating the unfathomed puzzles in society, we can learn how to communicate with others felicitously. For example, after we have studied the ethical totem which we did not understand, we come to discern that it is the belief of their own nation and we should respect it. When we know that every nation has their own ceremonies, we begin to understand each other, and when we visit them, we will not be embarrassed by the reason of misunderstanding the ceremonies of other nations.

Finally, with the investigation of the economy, we can explain many puzzles that we did not understand before. Then we can use what we have leant to develop our country. In the study of why stocks rise or fall, we know more about the laws of the development of the economy. From the economy crisis of Asia, we understand that we should optimize the system of economy in order to long-drawn development.

In sum, the puzzles in the past are our wealth. We should investigate them deeply, and we will benefit from it.
