I disagree with the speaker's assertion basically, though I concede that in some case the assertion may be suitable. To most extent, tradition and modernization are helpful to each other but incompatible.

In my opinion, tradition and modernization are "cooperating" with each other. To a certain extent, tradition is the "basis" and modernization is the "creation". To begin with, the basis breeds the creation such as a sew to a flower, without which flower cannot appear. And then the creation is brought to the basis for analysis and research, in order to evaluate whether such a creation is right or wrong. If the creation is good for human or world, it will be as a basis again to breed another creation.  So the tradition and modernization in some cases are changeable: today's tradition would be modernization of yesterday, and would generate modernization of tomorrow, and tomorrow's modernization would also be tradition of the future.

In science realm, admittedly, any theory or technology or new subject as modernization would not appear without enough basic knowledge, experience and exercise as tradition in compare. Let’s illustrate it with the new subject--some interdisciplines. Obviously, these interdisplines are created with some relational fundamental disciplines. For example, the biochemistry, when it comes, is on the basis of biology and chemistry and is to exemplify the biological problems with chemical methods and principles. While the two disciplines develop very well, and the relationship between them has been found by scientists, then it can be possible that the biochemistry appear.

Besides, after the new subject has generated, it then play important role in developing old subject and helping to some newer subject. Aside from some interdisplines, also many subjects can be used as explication. For instance, the genetics in our time, which still can be called as modernization, is doing such functions. On the one hand, it makes science better recognize some basic subject as the biology. On the other hand, it also makes science create other newer subject such as cytogenetics. Therefore, from such subject, it may show us more about tradition and modernization that they are helping each other.

However, some special cases should also be considered. Really there is some knowledge or theory do harm for the modernization. Such as when the "sun center theory" appeared, it was withdrawn by the "earth center theory". Certainly, such tradition should be given up entirely in this case.

In sum, the speaker's assertion basically is not according to the fact. In most cases, tradition and modernization are helpful to each other for the tradition also being the basis of modification. Yet, in some case they may be incompatible when some tradition is sheer reverse to the modernization.
