TOPIC: ISSUE48 - "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
WORDS: 424 TIME: 0:45:00 DATE: 2007-4-10
In the process of studying history, some people say we should emphasize on individuals, and others think we places so much emphasis on individuals that the right way to study history is to place emphasis on groups of people. However, in my opinion, what we should do is to construct a balance between individuals and groups of people.
To begin with, the individuals usually play a crucial role in the development of our society. During the development of human civilization, almost in each age we can find a important individual who has a great influence on the society. For instance, Lincoln, the president of the United State, supports the freedom of the slave. Though the Civil War broke out because of that, he finally won and liberated the slave. This event was very important in the history of the United State. Also, Confucius, a teacher in the old days of China, affected several generations in their character. Throughout the whole history of human beings, there are so many important individuals who contribute a lot to the development of the society.
What's more, we also should not neglect the influence of the public. In spite of the individuals are very important to the society, their ideas must be accomplished by the public. Fist, it is necessary that there are a mount of people who accept the individuals' ideas. In addition, the ideas of the individuals cannot be realized without the help and support of the public. For example, though Lincoln won the Civil War, how can he do that without the support the West people? So the public is also very important.
Finally, by the method of placing emphasis on individuals may be a good way to study history better and more easily. Both the individuals and the public people are important, but when we study the history we can have some benefit by placing emphasis on individuals. Common sense tells us that the individuals always are the representative person of the group. From study them, we can also learn from the groups. Besides, the time that we use to study is limit and the amount of individuals is always less than that of groups of people. Hence, by placing emphasis on individuals we can save a lot of time and we can study better and more conveniently.
In sum, both the individuals and the public people are important to the society. Though there is a controversy, the best way to settle the problem is to construct a balance between individuals and groups of people. |
