11.9 Researchers Sniff Out Brain Sex Differences

The psychological conditions vary by sex. More boys are diagnosed with autism and more girls with depression. Scientists at University of Rochester Medical Center want to understand any such sex differences. So the researchers study smell and gender in merely microscopic roundworms.  What can we learn our brain from tiny worms? Well these creatures have relative simple and well match nerve system. Some are male and some are hermaphroditic.  Scientists presented the worms with two scents. One is like buttery popcorn and another like green vegetables. Hermaphrodites most crawled toward buttery popcorn smell. Well males prefer vegetables. Then scientists manipulated some hermaphroditic worms to behave like they were male. And the newly worms now crowd to green pepper smell. What does it tell us about male and female human brains? Well, not much yet. But what surprise researchers is that brain presents both sexes like those registered small differences have different characteristics depends on sex of worm. This is the step on the path scientists hope to lead to great understanding about our sex differences and mental illness.

Using Google search, you can get a lot of relavent material that help your listening.
Reading these reference material is useful especially for spelling of terms you are not sure or names that do not follow rules of English pronounciattion. It may also help to understand the science the padcast is delivering.

【based on 普特听力SSS论坛 and yuuchin】

This is Scientific American 60-second psych. I'm Christine (1) Nicolson. Got a minute?

Which do you trust more? A memory of a dinner party (2) when you specifically recall sitting next to your parledgeac, or a memory that was just a fun time? Well Duke university (3)nuero-scientists say that we trust both memories a lot. Even though the general impression, type( 貌似time) memories are often (4)faults. Researchers tested the memories of subjects using (5)a brain machine through FRIM, and they found that when subjects have high confidence in memories that (6)work true, there was an increased activity in the (7)media-tempra-lobe where based the brain. This is the area that processes the details of an event. But when subjects have high confidence in memories for things that have never happened, they showed more activity at their frontal (8)piorital network, at the top of the brain. This is the area that processes duxxx feeling of an event. As we age, we tend to lose the ability to recall the specifics, but we do remember general impressions. However these are the ones that are often (9)faults. Um... how unfortunate! According to the Duke scientists, (10)allpsych-patients tend to be different, they lose both kinds of memory equally, and this may be a useful tool for early diagnosis.

Do psychological conditions vary by sex? More boys are diagnised with autism, and more girls

hermefadidic(hermaphroditic). Scientists presented (时态) the worms with two sense (scents), one smelled like buttery popcorn,

and another like green vegetables. Hermefadates(hermaphrodites) mostly crawled towards buttery popcorn, while

males preferred vegetables. Then scientists manipulated some of her meferdidic(听成所有格了,晕 hermaphroditic) neurons to

听这一篇,要了我得命啊。
幸亏kevin提供了一些线索可以参考一下才降低了难度,呵呵,谢谢kevin啊

11-12

This is Scientific American 60-second science. I'm Cynthia Graber.

Most bulletproof materials that cops wear today work by spreading outthe force of bullets impact. But that can still cause bruises and evensevere damages to internal organs. Now researchers at the University ofSydney are using nano technology to develop a vest that condries(conjures up) the image of a superman --- the bullets bounce away harmlessly. Theresearchers worked on a nanometer scale --- one millionth of a meter,with carbon nanotubes. A carbon nanotube is an atom fixed cylinderof graphite, like a penciled. They are lightweight, extremely strong,and can absorb a great deal of energy. But how do you optimize theseproperties to make a bulletproof vest. Researchers tested how nanotubesof different sizes responded to impacts. In place of bullets, they usedtiny super hard diamonds. Ironically, diamonds are just anotherarrangement of carbon atoms. Larger nanotubes were the best to deflect(at deflecting) the diamond projectiles. The nanotubes also quickly snapped back intoposition to deflect a second bullet that might hit the same spot. Thestudy published in the journal Nano Technology paves the way for asuper thin bulletproof vest of the future.

snap back ---- 1.     to become healthy and strong again after illness or weakness
                         2.     to regain a former or normal state

有个方法,我试了一下可行;
先下载一个podcast downloader,似乎有很多,我随便找了一个
下载地址是: http://www.streamingstar.com/hidownload-podcast-manager.htm

11-13

还是帖出来吧;
原始版本,太烂了;我听了1个多小时就这结果,不好意

Those clever little monkeys are on strike again. And I don't mean the riders-skilled, now I'm talking about the topft Carperchin monkeys at the Urkey's primate research center. Those headstrong primates have put down their feet, all of them, and refused to work for unfair wages. Their grievance is presented in a current outline edition of the precedings of the national academic of science. To test Carperchin's sense of fairness, France wallety collegue at Emma University designed a bartering test, in which monkeys are given tokens they can then exchange for food. Some monkeys get a plate of cucumbers slice, and others get a covered grape. Well the researchers just discovered that for the monkeys who get salad food see their friends get grape, they basically refuse to play any more. But are the monkeys really reactiong to inequity, thinking that she got a grape but I didn't? Or they just being greedy, I see grapes, I want one? Or maybe they were frustrated, last time I got a grape, now this? The current study suggests that the grapes of monkey indeed considered themselves sure changed. Test to see what they might type gives the ifident amount time and on whole until both labors of this sweet were settled.
