这句话我的理解是这样的：承接上一句，因为牧场的草料问题，所以有些马其实并没有吃得太多，但是他们一样很胖。所以看上去他们的胖是被逼无奈的（实在是找不到合适的词，大概就这个意思:loveliness: ）。不知道这样理解对不对。

You were pretty close but又丢了两个冠词a.   :)

1.   That’s a condition where the connective tissue between the hoof and bone falls apart. Condition means ailment here.

2.   Related to an epidemic of obesity…

Looks like horses may have been cowed into becoming fat. Cowed means forced or strong-armed 被迫。 知道cowed的意思，即使不知道全文大意，也不会不懂。显然是为了幽默，前面提到cattle，后面就用cow.
