Good news from the world of advertising? Well, yes. Because ads for nicotine patches and other ways to quit smoking actually work. And they work even if you don't buy the product being advertised. That's the strange finding of a study to be published by Cornell researchers in an upcoming issue of the journal of Political Economy. Because although some people who saw ads did buy the products being advertised, it seems that just seeing the acts convinces other people to try to quit or guardless of how they do it, which is usually  "cold turkey". The phenomena of influencing consumers beyond the advertised method is known as the spillover effect. A 2006 study by the same authors found that consumers see more ads for over-the-counter stop-smoking products than for those available only by proscription. Over-the-counter stop-smoking aids are more heavily advertised. So if more products were available over the counter, there would presumably be more advertising which in turn could lead to a lot more former smokers were guardless of how they stop puffing.

Being able to read with comprehension doesn’t just vastly improve the quality of life. Literacy can actually be the difference between life and death. That’s according to a study in the current issue of the journal Archives of Internal Medicine. The study began 10 years ago, when Northwestern university researchers started following more than 3000 medicare patients. They investigated tracked health as well as education, income, exercise , literacy , smoking and drinking habits and chronic medical conditions like asthma and diabetes . With a never expect(what they never expected) to discover was that low literacy was the second leading predictor of death in their studied population. Only smoking was a stronger indicator of a poor prognosis. David Backer, the principle author of the study, said [quota.] When patients can’t read, they are not able to do the things necessary to stay healthy: they don’t know how to take the medications correctly, they don’t understand when to seek medical are, and they don’t know how to care for their disease [end quota], all of which likely attribute to their higher probability of dying soon.

Good news from the world of advertising: researchers have found those who use English-English dictionaries (as opposed to English-Chinese dictionaries) tend to develop stronger top-down processing abilities. I am not trying to peddle any stop-using-English-Chinese-dictionary product here; neither am I trying to ask you to wean yourselves of English-Chinese dictionaries cold turkey. But I certainly hope that you would heed this new finding and that it would influence you in some small way.

This message is no prescription drug, simply a little piece of over-the-counter advice.   :)

As you plumply heard, the US is in the midst of obesity epidemic-- Americans just keep getting fatter and fatter. But the bad news doesn't end there. Because in today's issue of the New England journal of Medicine, scientists from Harvard and the University of California in San Diego report: the obesity is actually contagious and it seems you catch it from your friends. After analyzing 32 years with the data from more than 12,000 individuals, the researchers found that the thin people tend to cluster with thin people, and not just for warmth. And the people with more mass tend to gravitate toward one and other, too. But it's not the folksy friends with the similar forsee(??) or the people who pack on the pounds all frequent the same fast food franchises or avoid the same gyms. What the scientists think is happening is that those around you start plumping out, you come to think that being a bit hefty isn't such a bad thing. Then you become larger, so do your friends, and your friends' friends, and their friends as well. The good news is that losing weight also make your friends lighter. So, worry the salad and skip dessert, believe me, your friends will glad you did.
