What are some important qualities of a good supervisor? Give details to support your ideas.
The qualification of a good supervisor
Recently, there is a general discussion in my class on the important qualities of a good supervisor. Some argue that a qualified supervisor should lead by examples so that he or she is influential to the employees; others advocate the ability of tolerance to pressure lies in the recognition that since a supervisor could not endure stress, how can devote the energy and passion to work. As far as I am concerned, I am fully convinced that empathy, sense of humor and interpersonal skills should be given priority.

In the first place, a qualified supervisor should be empathetic. It must be admitted that supervisors are leaders and one of considerable important work to them is directing others. In order to manage the staff effectively and efficiently, a good supervisor should know what the staff are thinking so that appropriate action will be taken as a response to staff’s thoughts. A new survey conducted by the experts from Nanjing University indicates that popular among the staff are supervisors who are capable of forecasting the staff’s thoughts. Since the employees are satisfied with those empathetic leaders, isn’t it undeniable that it will bring about effectiveness and efficiency, which will of course benefit the company.

Another quality which is equally important as empathy is the sense of humor. The major reason of choosing the sense of humor lies in the recognition that humor will bring happiness and relaxation. The interview I have done with some managers from Shell, Boeing and HP over these years leads me to believe that good supervisors who embody a strong sense of humor make tough work easy done. Humor, which is essential to supervisors, can create an easy atmosphere and will wipe out the pressure that always causes mental disease among modern workers. Furthermore, humorous supervisors make themselves outgoing and can build a harmonious relationship between their staff and themselves in their work environment.

In addition to empathy and sense of humor mentioned above, interpersonal skills should not be ignored. Since supervisors not only lead staff but also encounter clients, crucial to well-round supervisors are undoubtedly interpersonal skills. No companies are willing to hire some supervisors who are bad at interpersonal skills.

From what have been discussed above, we may safely draw the conclusion that as a qualified supervisor, one should be both empathic and humorous in order to manage employees effectively and efficiently; meanwhile, interpersonal skills, which is helpful in doing business with clients, is also a requirement for being a good supervisor.
