In this statement the author recommends that all faculty spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach to ameliorate the quality of instruction at the college and university level. In principle, I concede the recommendation.

To begin with, as the development of science and technology, a lot of knowledge in textbook
has been becoming out of date. As everyone knows, working out of academic world can help the professors to keep pace with the development in his or her field. In authentic work, professors can know about the trend of development of his field, which of cause will provide inspiration and give an impulse to his or her research. For example, as the development of society, many things appear, such as mercy killing, which challenge the professors in law. Via working as a lawyer or a judge, a professor can draw inspiration to address this kind of new problem by revise laws. In that sense, all faculty should spend some time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the course they teach.

Additionally, an important aim of education at college and university lies in helping graduates to be employed. However, the competition in employment market becomes more and more serious, which requires graduates qualify practical job, however that is just the weakness of most students. If all faculty has the experience of working outside the academic world, they know what graduates must muster to qualify the practical job, thus they can improve the curriculum and make other effort to help the students to adapt the practical job. For example, a professor of medic who knows what most graduates lakes as a qualified doctor via working as a doctor himself or herself can nourish those abilities of students in everyday education. Undoubtedly, this kind of teachers can help their graduates to find a content job.

However, nothing is absolute including the foregoing recommendation, especially considering it is difficult for the teachers in philosophy, mathematics, astronomy etc to work outside academic world. Those subjects is too abstract or have too little relationship with practical world, which make the teacher in those subject even impossible to achieve an opportunity to work outside the academic word in relevant profession.

Generally speaking, the experience working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach an help teachers to improve the instruction, but in fact, it depends to the profession.
