Argument 140
The committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University recommends that Professor Thomas receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson. To support this recommendation the committee also cites different evidence. This argument is logically flawed in several critical respects.
To begin with, the argument unfairly assumes that if we do not improve Professor Thomas’s position and salary, he will leave Elm City. The author provides no evidence to substantiate these assumptions. Lacking such evidence it is entirely possible that Professor Thomas is content with current position and salary. More salary will give her more stress or she does not want to live a busy life.
Secondly, that her classes are among the largest at the university, do not necessarily indicate that she is popular among students. Perhaps it is not elective courses; students have to take her courses.
Third, the report indicates that the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. However, perhaps two years agoshe had brought little money, even no money at all. Moreover, the author does not provide information about other professors. Maybe all of they has brought more money than her. Even if she has brought more money, we can not infer that she is good at teaching and researching.
Even if Professor Thomas is a talented professor, the author provides no firm evidence that she would be a good chairperson. Perhaps she does not have leading capacities.
Finally, the author does not compare Professor Thomas with other professors. Perhaps many professors who achieve as much as her receive the same or less salaries. Such a raise and promotion of Professor Thomas will involve other professors’ dissatisfaction.
In sum, the author cannot justify their recommendation on the basis of the scant evidence provided in the report. To bolster the recommendation the author must provide better evidence that Professor Thomas is discontent with her position and salary and makes more contributions than other professors. I would also need to know whether most professors think that professor Thomas is supposed to accord with such a raise and promotion.
