The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University. During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University foe another college."
班级最大不一定说明她教学质量好
研究方面为学校带来的利润大不代表研究能力高
加薪和职位提升是否必要?即使必要,这样的做法一定能留住她么?
The argument above doesn’t give us enough convincing evidence to prove that we should give Professor Thomas a raise and promotion to protect her from leaving Elm City University. As a matter of fact, we should think carefully whether Professor Thomas worth the raise and promotion, or whether we have to give her the raise and promotion to keep her stay there.
In the first place, the argument fails to prove that Professor Thomas does well in teaching. Although her classes are largest at the university, it can’t be the evidence of the argument. For example, the subject Professor Thomas teach is a required class for a mount of students, and there is a lack of teachers in teaching this subject. So many students have no choice but take her class, no matter how they are loathly. Or most students take Professor Thomas’s class of their own accord, but maybe they take her class for other causes. May be because of her personality or famousness, her class become the largest. That fact just proves Professor Thomas’s popularity, not her demonstrated teaching. In addition, there is no evidence to show that students get enough knowledge they want or promotion themselves after taking Professor Thomas’ class. If the author really wants prove Professor Thomas has a great teaching ability, he should give us more information and evidence.
In the second place, we could doubt if Professor Thomas has such research abilities as the author said. Although she has brought to the university more money than her annual salary, it can’t be the evidence to show that she has good research abilities. Research abilities don’t mean money. For example, some sponsors take the university more money every year, can we think they have good research abilities? Obviously we can’t. So the conclude that Professor Thomas has demonstrated research abilities is weak.
In addition, even though Professor Thomas’ demonstrated teaching and research abilities have been proved, is it a good idea to give her a salary raise and promotion? Maybe annual salary of $50,000 has been a very high income in Elm City University. There might be disagrees from other teachers of the $10,000 raise to Professor Thomas as the same as the promotion. So before we conclude, we should make a survey within the teachers of Elm City University whether the raise and promotion are necessary. And whether Professor Thomas has the ability to be the Department Chairperson is unknown. May be she is just good at teaching and research, but is not good at management. Besides, if Professor Thomas attribute herself to the university, she won’t leave no matter she can reserve the raise and promotion. But if she has decided to leave, she won’t turn back no matter how much money you give to her.
In sum, the argument is not convincing to prove that Professor Thomas have great abilities of teaching and research. Also the author fails to persuade people to make a decision that giving Professor Thomas a raise and promotion to keep her stay in the university. We should make more survey and think more carefully before we make this decision.
