Inquiring the everlasting truth behind superficial phenomenal about ourselves and the surrounding environment is a kind of human nature no matter we interpret them using scientific methods or through parapsychology way. Based on this circumstance, this statement alleges to support nonmainstream areas of inquiry for the reason that they play a vital role in our society by assuage human needs in the realm where mainstream science is not involved in. I share the speaker’s sentiments on this problem so far as in the aspects of culture, belief and human limitations. However admittedly, mainstream science should be advocated mainly with respect to the technology improvement and analytic thinking.

Nonmainstream areas of inquiry have been a far-reaching existence in human history. From the wizard ritual in time immemorial to tribal totem carved on the poles, human beings are expressing their understandings and respects to the great nature around. Some of these paranormal explanations have already fused into their respective culture and become an indispensable part of it. For instance, in Tibetan Buddhism, people believe their religious leader Dalai Lama or Panchen Lama are the incarnations of Buddhas. This succession of reborn has lasted for centuries and embodies part of Tibetan culture generally. Also, in modern Western astrology the signs of the zodiac are believed to represent twelve basic personality types or characteristic modes of expression. Nowadays, this saying has widely spread all over the world and proved to be a representative of western culture while lost its astrology nature in the first place. At the same time, Chinese agricultural calendar, five elements, the 12 zodiac animals and so on provide ways of gaining insight into Chinese culture and tradition as well. In this point of view, nonmainstream areas of inquiry are more than a culture being preserved by human beings which we should cherish and explore rather than abandon.

In addition, the harmony of life requires us to keep away from intervene other people’s believes. Everyone should be given the freedom to speak and insist one’s own mind and opinion without interruption. Various beliefs are testaments of liberty in modern society. As an antitheist and a disciple of mainstream science, I never intend to negate the value of belief in parapsychology, astrology and so forth. Considering that about hundreds of years ago, even the smartest mind in the world would believe in a flat earth, we are not supposed to disaffirm the possibility of error that the mainstream science may commit. It is not judicious trying to persuade everyone to accept the same idea, even if it is to some extent “orthodox”. In spite of nowadays, just like the controversies of evolution being involved into the curriculum would never stop in United States, the crashes and intolerant between the mainstream and nonmainstream science would hardly be quiet down, discrepant beliefs—as an irreplaceable fact in the society---are still worth advocating and supporting.  

Also, human beings, as one of the species on earth, have limitations on explaining every phenomenon around us. Why sometimes people have extra-sensory perception? Why do some of us have the near death experience or out-of-body experience? Why do some people insist they see apparitions? We have to concede that with the current science knowledge, we are not able to understand and interpret these incidents thoroughly. In this case, nonmainstream areas of inquiry fill up the blanks that left out by mainstream science. It is cardinal for us to maintain channels other than science to answer the questions which elude our understandings. Astrology, fortune-telling, psychic and paranormal pursuits and so on are pertaining to one of these particular channels literally.

Having recognized the importance of nonmainstream areas of inquiry, we are also supposed to understand that the pursuit of nature science, as a conventional way of illustrating the environment, provides us the continuous momentum for technological updates and social improvements. The first and second industrial revolutions which boost the standard of our everyday lives to a new level were based on the breakthroughs in science to a large extent. Today, we are in the age of digital resolution which brought about by integrated circuits and alleged to be one of the most significant occurrences in the history of mankind. This is also profit by the development in science and technology. Too many evidences have proved to us the influence of science study. We therefore should realize the vital role of mainstream science as well.

In conclusion, the unconventional areas of inquiry are important to our society either in the perspective of culture belief or human limitation. As reasonable people, we are required to understand the crucial role played by these behaviors. However, mainstream science is neither supposed to fall off from the way of social improvement. We should treat this problem in a comprehensive and prudent point of view.
