The following appeared in an editorial in a business magazine.
"Although the sales of Whirlwind video games have declined over the past two years, a recent survey of video-game players suggests that this sales
trend is about to be reversed. The survey asked video-game players what features they thought were most important in a video game. According to
the survey, players prefer games that provide lifelike graphics, which require the most up-to-date computers. Whirlwind has just introduced
several such games with an extensive advertising campaign directed at people 10 to 25 years old, the age-group most likely to play video games.
It follows, then, that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months."

In this argument, the arguer concludes that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically based on a recent survey, which reveals that lifelike graphics are most important features in a video-game. The arguer believes that several games with lifelike graphics made by whirlwind with extensive advertising can certainly lead to a sales growth in the following months. However, this argument is problematic for several reasons.
First of all, the survey result is open to doubt. Since we all know that it differs from boys and girls, children and youth, that what kind of games they prefer, what features they think most important, the survey does not tell us whether it covers all kinds of people or not. Perhaps it only surveyed young girls who love the beautiful graphics of games, ignoring boys who enjoy the excitement of fighting in wars. Further, players will not necessary buy the games with the most important features. It is possible that they think the lifelike graphic feature is important simply because it just looks more beautiful than those unimaginative graphic games. However, the games with careful designed plot and character may also have many customers; even its graphic is relatively not so good.
Even if we concede that this kind of game will be welcome, it is still dubious that the sales trend will be reversed of Whirlwind through extensive advertising campaign. The fact that the sales have declined over the past years shows that the product of Whirlwind may have some fetal problems, such as low graphic quality, simple game design, etc. Without these problems resolved, the sales will not increase.
Moreover, the games with lifelike graphics require the most up-to-date computer, as the arguer says. However, when some people find the new game of Whirlwind attracted, they may also realize that their computer is not advanced enough to run the game. Since few families will buy a new computer in order to play a new game, it is suspect that the sales trend will reverse dramatically.
In conclusion, the arguer fails to convince us that the new product will make the sales trend reverse dramatically with several false. To strengthen this argument, the arguer should provide more evidence that the games with lifelike graphic will be welcome and make Whirlwind’s sale increase dramatically in the next months. |
