Does the study of history have value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives? On my opinion, of course, the historical research with respect to the common lives is valuable as the speaker presents, however, the study regarding other aspects such as archeology, literature, politics, and so forth, which has less relationship with realistic lives, can neither be depreciated nor underestimated by human beings.

In the first place, the study of history that has hand-in-glove correlation with people’s daily lives is consistently doing more or less operation on the various sides of the ordinary lives; consequently, it is worthwhile to research on. For example, as we known, the United State has long had a reputation as a pioneer in ingenious technology – from incandescent lights, sewing machines and cotton gains to telephones, television, computers, airplanes and spaceships. From the thorough research into the science and technology history since such a long time ago, we may find the in – depth impression to past and today Americans’ everyday life style. It has largely and gradually effects people’s working and life way, finally changes the methods to deal with everything. Moreover, if we study the technological developmental history, then we can unearth the rule or even form the integrated methodology that may guide the worldwide scientists and engineers to create and invent more useful equipment, in end bringing convenience to enhance the quality of publics’ lives.

Nevertheless, there exist some other ramifications of the history that seem irrelevant with the people’s daily lives. The study of the historic events mainly in term of politics or the whole country’s decisions is a typical example. Howbeit, we could not overlook its function. On the one hand, for conducting a serious and comprehensive survey to a series of policies, understanding the guidelines’ preparation, enforcement, effect and consequence, the political leaders can draw some helpful experience for contemporary affairs that may facilitate the progress of the whole society.
On the other hand, actually, from these similar researches, we can see the reflection of some people’s goals and new values, in other words, the indirect influence on peoples’ ideology. For instance, American youth have ever been disillusioned by the Vietnam War and Watergate, and many young people at that time found their idealism under strain and became cynical early. Then, clearly, the illustration manifests history research on such areas can promote our understanding with respect to human’s spirit and philosophy. Accordingly, in all, history investigation that has fewer links with public’s lifestyle is also valuable.

In sum, the speaker’s conclusion is partly correct as it stands. To my perspective, the study of the history is functional for not only the individual lifestyle but also the society’s progression, regardless of whether it is relevant to our daily life.
