I wholeheartedly agree that investment in research is almost always a wise choice, while when the results are somehow controversial, careful consideration should be undertaken to decide if the research is worth going on.

It seems that modern science and technique benefit people quite a lot in our daily lives, and therefore research deserves adequate money to grantee its continuance. Many research results can be utilized quickly. For instance, the new mode of telecommunication, the "3rd Generation" technique, enable people to surface the website, receive emails, and watch television via mobile phone. This technique can make our lives more convenient, so it is necessary to spend enough money on it. While other researches may not make profit as the "3G", financial support should be given as well, because of their potential contribution to the society. For example, researches in historic, linguistics, and philosophy, whose results may not be applied into practical quickly, but they will benefit us indirectly. Therefore, money should be provided to those researches that can benefit people, not only immediately but also indirectly.

Nevertheless, the results of some research may be controversial, confusing people whether to carry on the research or not. I believe that the controversy may be caused from different reasons, which should be considered carefully. First, the controversy may be resulted by the limitation of people's scope which is restricted by the times people live in. Galileo, for instance, studied the university we lived in, and concluded that the earth is revolving around the sun, but at that time people believed the earth to be the center of the world and refused to accept his result. Today we view Galileo's theory as correct, but in the eye of those objectors, this result is quite controversial. Galileo could not continue his study because of the objection of the authority. Today we should try to avoid tragedy like this and think over which research would be continued in spite of its seeming controversy. Second, the controversy may be arisen from the uncertainty of its results. Some scientists are studying the movement of minor planets in the university, which have the risk, though quite little, to impact the earth someday. Some people may argue that since the possibility of impact is quite small, researches like this are nonsense, and wasting a large sum of money. However, I believe this conclusion is hasty. Since we cannot certain what will really happen, researches like this are definitely necessary being invested to carry on.

While there are some other researches that actually will do harm to our society, we should stop them immediately. Some computer masters, who have a large enthusiasm in program, write some computer virus to show their master technique, which may cause a great loss to people. The hackers may consider their work to be wise and intelligent, but I think no money should be spent on researches like this.

We should make great effort to support the profitable researches, and be alert to those controversial researches. When it coming to which researches can be continued and which should be stopped, great consideration and careful investigate should be adopted to determine.
