With the development of productivity, we have more choices to invest money in other aspects besides living. Compared with other investment, money spent on research is almost always a good choice if the results of it are uncontroversial.

Including new scientific theories, inventions or both of them, the results of research create a great deal of profits. On the one hand, as the inventions or theories come into being, the investor will possibly gain a lot by putting them into practice. Noble is just the case. While dynamite invented by him becoming widely used, his possessions increased exponentially only through selling it. On the other, some achievements of research drive the society to make progress markedly and benefit most people living in it. For instance, the occurrence of steam engine improved industrial productivity remarkably and eventually caused the industrial revolution which thought to be the beginning of modern society. Ever since that time we went into an automatization era in which people have a more convenient life style. For the interests of individuals or the whole society created by research are so great, the point that research is always a good investment is reasonable.

In order to make a better investment, we should try to avoid doing research whose results are controversial. The chief reason is because controversy might impair the transformation from research to real profits. E.g. the research on technology of cloning, though scientists have made great progress in it, for the ethical questions caused by the results, it is still within the confine of government. Up to now it offers few profits while consumes lots of energies and money. On the contrast, the research on cross-fertilized rice, whose results are increasing output of agriculture which are uncontroversial, is going on well and contributes to meeting more and more demand of provisions. Therefore, compared with those having controversial results, researches without such results are far better investments.   

Admittedly, it might be hard to predict all the results of every research. In the long term some of those unpredicted results may make research which was thought to have uncontroversial ones into profitless or even worse. However, almost every kind of investment is somewhat a venture; research is also hard to be avoided. But with the development oftechnology, such as computer models, a new method to predict results by simulating the same conditions will help to make more accurate predictions. Further more, cautious attitude towards predicting would also decrease the possibility of occurrence of man—made mistakes. Therefore, it is justifiable to believe that researchers have great potential to predict more accurately.

In sum, provided results of the research are uncontroversial, money spent on it is almost always a good investment. Because it is able to create a huge profit and meet the inherent demand of social advancement.
