TOPIC: ISSUE69 - "Government should place few, if any, restrictions on scientific research and development"

I can not totally agree with the speaker's assertion that the government should set restrictions on searching the science. Insatiate appetite to the unknown field is the power of progressing, so if there are restrictions to limit the research, the whole society won't go forward. But on the other hand, if the research has a trend that towards the direction of endangering the society, it should be limited. I will discuss the problem in these two respects in the following paragraphs.

    Firstly, I think the government set restrictions to the research is not a sound policy, science with its goal of discovering the new theory and search for the knowledge, there should be no limits, since if there is a limit the science work that will bring us benefits will be suspended because of the nonsense limits, the mystery of the mummy won’t be discovered if the government set restrictions that restrict people to do with it in the excuse of protecting the cultural relic; the deathful disease will not be cured if the government confine that we should not do experiments on the animals such as mouse. So the government should not place many restrictions on scientific research.

    Secondly, if there is a limit of the scientific research and development we should try our best to break it, to make the truth publicly. As there is a lot of forerunners that do this way, for instance, the founder of the heliocentric ordering of the planets, Copernicus. He is the best example, at his time people believed that the earth they live is the centric of the universe, and the religion belief restrict that the earth centric theory should not be suspected, and all the scientific research trying to break this belief should be stopped ,and the scientist should be punished ,and Copernicus's adherent Brunet has been burned to dead for his sticking to this theory, but as time goes by ,the theory is proved to be true. So we all should fight with the restrictions to find the truth.

   Admittedly, when the scientific research related to the moral standards and depart with the morality and justice, whether the research should be done need comprehensive considering, once the research goes to the direction that will do harm to the society, the whole world will be vibrated. To illustrate this, there is an appropriate example, the clone has been the hot issue for many years, even now there exist arguments that debate between whether clone can be used in human or not .The research of cloning the humankind should be limited, since once the technology of cloning be wrongly used, it will jeopardize the whole world, we should place restrictions that confine the scientist of clone to use this kind of skill in case of it will do harm to the humankind.

    In sum, all the things have two sides, we should take comprehensive attitude toward the things. The scientists need freedom to do research, the theory come and merely come from hunting after the unknown world, restrictions will suspend the research. But the freedom is relative, not absolutely free, the morality should always be the first thing
that be taken into account. When the research conflicts with the morality, it should be stopped.
