74"The most effective way to communicate an idea or value to large groups of people is through the use of images, not language."
I fundamentally agree with the speaker’s assertion that image is more effective to be used in communicating an idea or value to large groups of people than language. Although we speak language to express ourselves most frequently, the language become incompetent in some certain occasions.
Language conduces to misunderstanding quite easily, especially that is emerged evidently in some multi-language occasions. A apt illustration is the CCTV abbreviation, in China it is widely known that CCTV is amounted to China Central Television, but in other countries of the world CCTV is considered to Closed-Circuit Television. Then, when a Chinese mention to CCTV with an American, you can imagine how confused they can be. That just in the same language situation, now what about the conversation between tow persons of different native language, what even about the conversation among a large groups of people who speak dissimilar language? For example, as a result of globalization, in corporations it is quite common that people from different nations or cultural backgrounds working together. Therefore the misinterpretation is inevitable when an idea expressed in the form of language. Thus the more people of different language, the more diverse the translation.
Furthermore in some special aspects, language cannot be competent for expression. For instance, one of the most famous artistic paintings the Mona Lisa by Da Vinci, I cannot believe that anyone can express the artistic conception of that artwork in any language instead, even by skillful linguist.
Whereas, the advantages of image is necessary to be clarified. Image is vivid, visual and intuitionistic. Forasmuch it can be understood by people of different native language. A common example, the traffic warning signs are made out with imagine in every country in the earth. That is reasonable, and it just incarnates the advantages of image.
However, language is more convenience than image. That just is why our ancestors invent characters. We cannot draw a picture for expressing any meaning, that can wastes much time, and with language we just open our mouths to speak in one minute. Moreover many abstract things must be expressed by language. Just like thought and feeling except for vision. Is our thought or touch feeling visible? It is funny. They cannot be explained in image, because they are invisible. And the language can be used to generalize something just like the law, the most of the situation about legality and illegality can be generalized accurately with letters. That is incapable for image, can we take overall the photos about all the situation?
In sum, we express with language as much as possible, because of its convenience, when there is something is difficult to be explained by speaking or writing in our talking, it is time to use image. So we had better to combining the language and the image in our conversations. |
