14        What do you do if you have a fight with your friend?
15        How important are friends to you? II Has it always been that way?
Helpful Ideas and Useful Expressions.
Can you make friends with your families?
        Yes, I think so. Actually, I feel more attached to my parents than anyone else. They have been my best friends, whether I was a high school student, or now at college. When I'm in trouble or meet difficulties, they are ready to help. They are always supportive and reliable. Yes, there's something called the generation gap and sometimes we have disagreements, but eventually we can reach an agreement.
Do you have any close friends? II How did your friendship develop?
        Yes, I have many friends and acquaintances but only one of them is very close to me. We met in our first year in senior middle school, about five years ago. We were both in the same experimental class. We had a lot more free time than students in the regular classes, so we did many interesting things together. I think friendship takes time to develop.
        Speaking of friends, I'd like to talk about John. He's not very tall but he's an energetic football player. He comes from Britain and we got to know each other because he was my English teacher. Last year he taught me English at a language school. He's very humorous, but in class he was strict with us. We were not allowed to speak Chinese in his class. If we failed in a quiz, we had to stay in the classroom studying until we could talk to him in English fluently. Because of his hard work, we could speak good English, and he and I became good friends. We often go to bars to have a talk. He introduces his country to me and I tell him about Chinese culture. I think our friendship will help people in both of our countries to know each other better.
How important are friends to you? II Has it always been that way?
        Friends are very important to me. Friendship is what I value most. When I am with my friends, I am happy and time passes quickly. When I feel miserable or depressed, my friends always come to comfort me. When I am in trouble, I may turn to my friends for help. And of course, I would do the same for them just as they do for me. In short, friends are the most important part of my life.
        Friendship is very important to me. I can talk with my friends about my family, my worries or my plans. They give me a lot of advice and support. I can share my happiness or sadness with them. Without friends, it is very difficult to survive in modern society, which is full of competition and struggle.

Topic 4 Hometown
1        Tell me about your hometown. II Has your hometown changed in your life time?
2        What's the weather like there?
3        Were you born there? II What's it like growing up there?
4        How long have you lived there? II Did you enjoy living there?
5        What's the most interesting thing about it?
6        Is it an old city? II Is it famous for anything?
7        How do you like the people in your hometown?
8        What are the good points about living there? II Are there any drawbacks to living there?
9        What do people do to make a living in your hometown?
10        Is it an expensive place to live in?
11        Would you say it's a good place to live in?
12        Is it an attractive place? II Has it changed in the last few years?
13        What are the public transportation facilities like there? II Have they changed a lot in the last ten years?
14        Are there good shopping facilities? II Have the facilities changed since you remember?
15        Does it offer good employment opportunities? II Has the employment situation changed in recent years?
Helpful Ideas and Useful Expressions.
Tell me about your hometown. II Has your hometown changed in your life time?
        My hometown is a beautiful place. It stands beside a wide river at the foot of low green hills. It has many fine buildings and wide streets. Wherever you go, you can see trees and flowers. But it has not always been like that. When I was in high school, it was a sad and dirty little town. Some people lived in dark, unhealthy rooms in old buildings and others in huts on narrow muddy streets. Nearly everyone was poor and many had no work.
        Great changes have taken place in my hometown since the late 1980s. The people have got rid of the mud and dirt. They have put up theatres, shops and flats in the centre of the town. Along the river they have built schools, hotels and a big park. Factories and businesses have sprung up. Because the economy has developed rapidly and steadily, the people's living standard has been improved greatly.
How do you like the people in your hometown?
        Well, visitors in my hometown all say they enjoy the people there, because they are treated well and they never feel like outsiders. My hometown people are honest when they do business with you - you never get short-changed or anything like that.
        There are things I dislike about people in my hometown. For example, people don't talk ¬they shout at each other, though this doesn't mean they are angry. They are just too noisy. The other thing I find annoying is that some people litter or even spit in public places.

Topic 5 Family & Family Life
1        Tell me about your family.
2        Is your family important to you? II Has it always been the same?
3        Are you more like your mother or your father?
4        Do you still have your grandparents?
5        What kind of things do you do as a family?
6        Do I did you often eat out together? II Has it always been the same?
7        Is motherhood a career? II Would you (your wife) like to continue your (her) career or stay at home taking care of the household?
8        Were your parents strict with you? II Has your parents' attitude changed since you were a child?
9        What is a typical Chinese family like? II Have things changed since you remember?
10        Do you have any children?
11        Who does the housework in your family?
12        Who does the cooking?
13        Do you agree that housework is never finished?
14        Do you prefer to spend time with your family or with your friends?
15        Have you ever been away from your family for a long time?
Helpful Ideas and Useful Expressions.
Is your family important to you? II Has it always been the same?
        Yes, they are very important to me. Although I live alone now, I do go back to see my parents at weekends. I miss them a lot. I need their support and comfort whenever I feel depressed and I also need them to share my pleasure or success with me. Of course, when I was a small child I couldn't bear to live a day without seeing my mother.
        Yes, my family means a lot to me. I feel I can only relax being at home with my wife and my son. I'm very much a family man and a proud father. Having a child really changed the way I look at family life.
Is motherhood a career? II Would you (your wife) like to continue your (her) career or stay at home taking care of the household?
        Well, it just depends. There are some women who think too much of their family life. They prefer to stay at home to take care of the household if possible. But as for me, career should also be an important part of my life. Especially in the modern world, women need to be financially independent and have their own pursuit of hobbies and interests. And nobody can afford to live for others.
        Well, I have never thought about this before. But, personally, motherhood is much more important than a career. Anyhow, I think it all depends on my wife. If she wants to continue her career, I will have no opposing views.
Who does the housework in your family?
        My husband or my father does most of the cooking at home and they are great cooks. It is surprising because traditionally it is the wife or mother's job to do the cooking as in the saying "A woman's place is in the kitchen."
Do you agree that housework is never finished?
        Yes, but if you can arrange time wisely and share housework with your wife or husband, you will still have plenty of time to do something you're interested in.
        Absolutely yes. Housework is always very boring with too many routine tasks. And sometimes it seems to be tiring. You cannot finish doing household chores until bedtime every day. And when the next week comes you have to do the same things again. So it's really very troublesome. I prefer to have some housemaids to do all this sort of work for me. But somehow I manage to do it.

13        What changes have taken place with regard to food in your country?
14        Have the eating habits changed for Chinese people during recent years?
15        What are the advantages and disadvantages of inviting a friend to your home for dinner instead of going to a restaurant?
Helpful Ideas and Useful Expressions.
Do you like cooking? II Have you learned a little bit about cooking?
        Yes, very much. I'm good at cooking different styles of dishes. So, I prefer to eat at home rather than in a restaurant.
        Not much. For one thing, I'm too busy to learn how to cook now. For another, I don't care much for what I eat. Luckily, my mother does the cooking and she's a very good cook.
        No, I don't like it because I think it wastes time. You have to prepare the ingredients, washing, cutting and cooking. It's really boring. You know, I'm really bad at it. I never know the appropriate quantity of those ingredients.
Have the eating habits changed for Chinese people during recent years?
        Yes, of course. Chinese people's dietary habits are undergoing a drastic change. In the past, the food was very monotonous and meat was regarded as a delicacy, but now you can have whatever comes to mind and vegetables are considered nutritious. We begin to think more about food quality rather than quantity. For example, green food, which is not affected by any pollution, is becoming more and more popular these days.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of inviting a friend to your home for dinner instead of going to a restaurant?
        If you invite a friend to your home, you have to take time to cook, but you will have a good atmosphere when having meals because you can listen to music and have a hearty talk. If you go to a restaurant, you save energy but maybe the food is not as delicious as you expected or maybe it's not clean.

3        Do you often look for bargains and special sales?
4        What are differences in shopping habits between men and women?
5        Do you often go to supermarkets? II Has it always been that way?
6        What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of shopping in supermarkets?
7        Do you prefer to shop in department stores or smaller shops? II Has it always been that way?
8        Do you have a community shop that you often go to?
9        Which aspects about goods do you usually take into consideration when you are deciding what to buy?
10        How has shopping changed in the last fifteen to twenty years?
11        Do you think the Internet is a good way to shop?
12        Does advertising influence your shopping habits?
13        Do you think that products that are often advertised are better than those that are not?
14        Do you check prices in different stores before you buy something?
15        Do you do a lot of window-shopping before you buy something expensive?
Helpful Ideas and Useful Expressions.
How often do you go shopping? II Tell me about your shopping habits.
        I go shopping once a week. I usually buy some food, such as fruit, cookies and some stationery. I usually go shopping with my roommates. I get the information from the newspapers, TV and also from my friends, if my friends say a particular brand is good, I'll buy that brand. I think a private source is more reliable than ads.
Who does most of the shopping in your home, your father or your mother? II What are their shopping habits?
        In my home, my mother always does the shopping. She buys groceries every other day. She puts the meat and vegetables we cannot finish in the refrigerator. She likes to go to the grocery store around 9 0' clock in the morning when it is not rush hour. When she goes to the market, she doesn't like to bargain with vendors, because she thinks it's a waste of time. According to her, the money saved is not worth the effort. Time is money!
        I enjoy shopping, so I do the shopping most of the time. When you go shopping, it doesn't necessarily mean that you have to buy something. I enjoy taking my time, walking around to see what's on sale and what's available. You can always find something you need. I never feel it is tiring. And I must say I really enjoy shopping very much.
Do you often look for bargains and special sales?
        Bargains are products that are reduced in price. Some are real bargains, because they are cheaper in price but the quality is quite good. I like the real bargains. But it takes a lot of time, and you have to hunt for bargains. Once I bought a pair of leather shoes at half price, I felt very happy. Some customers who cannot resist the temptation will buy the product. Later when they find out that they have been cheated, they will be very angry. Bargains are good if they are real bargains. However, one has to be careful in buying bargains. It's also wise never to buy anything you don't really need just because it's cheap.
Which aspects about goods do you usually take into consideration when you are deciding what to buy?
        From the most important to the least important, they are quality, price, brand, service, material, colour, style, taste for food, packaging especially for gifts, expiration date for food.

15        What kind of music do you like best? II Has your taste changed over time?
Helpful Ideas and Useful Expressions.
What are some of your hobbies and interests? II How did you become interested in this hobby? II Why?
        I enjoy playing basketball in my leisure time. I learned it in middle school. I think basketball is an excellent sport. It's very beneficial to my physical health. When you play on the court, you will do many actions - running, jumping and throwing. Almost all parts of your body can be exercised adequately. It's a game full of fun and competition. Two teams attack and defend by turns in order to score the most points. Teamwork is more important than individual ability, so you must learn how to cooperate with other team members. For example, passing the ball to your partner to get through the defence. It's not easy, but this is the most intriguing thing to me because you know how necessary cooperation is in modern society. It's the reason why nike this activity. Everyone tries his best to playas a team. It's pleasant and exciting. Moreover I've made a lot of friends on the court. We share the enjoyment and exchange skills. In other words I love this game.
        I like singing because it can make me happy and excited. I often sing with my friends in the KTV. After singing, we always chat together. We can share each other's pain and happiness and give each other advice. I believe most girls like singing, and I am no exception.
Do you think hobbies are beneficial to social life?
        Yes. I think hobbies are advantageous to social life. People will engage in their hobbies together and the stability of society will be increased. Otherwise, maybe some people will develop bad habits and even do something harmful to this society.
Do you think one's hobbies reveal a great deal about one's personality?
        Well, I think so. There is always a connection between hobbies and personality. One example is that a quiet person would probably prefer listening to classical solo music, whereas an extrovert and outgoing person may be a jazz lover. He, like jazz musicians, likes to improvise.

Topic 9 Transportation

12        Is there an underground system in your city?
13        Do you prefer to take the bus or the underground?
14        Why are cars becoming more and more popular these days?
15        Can you imagine the transportation in the future and describe it for me?
Helpful Ideas and Useful Expressions.
What do you think of transportation in your city? II Has it always been the same?
        In our city the public transportation is mainly buses and taxis. There is no subway system over here. Many people have motorcycles and bikes as the means of transport. Motorcycles are very popular and convenient. More and more people have private cars. So there are always traffic jams at the rush hour. And hence environmental pollution is a very serious problem here. Perhaps a solution is to develop good public transportation and restrict private motorcycles and cars. By doing so, I'm sure that the environment will be improved a bit.
        Nowadays, there are more and more vehicles in our city. You can choose to travel by bicycle, bus, subway and taxi, or drive your own car to go to work. If you like, you can travel on foot of course. And of course, bicycles, buses and the underground railway are the three most popular means of transport.
Do you enjoy flying? II What do you think about flying?
        Well, planes are the safest and fastest means of transport. And I enjoy flying very much, but the flight tickets are very expensive. If you have a long distance trip more than 800 kilometres, it's advisable to take planes if you can afford it because they are fast, safe and convenient. Trains are much cheaper than planes. If your destination is located near the train station and within 300 kilometres, you should take the train. They are more comfortable than planes.
How do you travel to work or school every day? II Have you always travelled that way?
        I travel to work by bicycle. Riding a bicycle is very convenient because a bicycle can take me anywhere and it causes no pollution. Besides, it gives me the opportunity to do some physical exercise. I can keep a good figure if I keep riding a bike for a long time. But if I have to go a long distance, I will choose a bus or taxi, otherwise it would make you very tired and waste your time.
Do you often take taxis? II What is the benefit of taxi services?
        Yes, I take taxis quite a lot. From my own experience, if you are going to a place nearby, taxis are your best choice. They can take you anywhere and you needn't worry about the problem of parking.
Why are cars becoming more and more popular these days?
        Cars are growing more important and more popular these days. There are two main reasons for this. First of all, big cities are spread out and much more closely linked with other ones with advanced highway systems. People like to move around in cities. Cars provide the most comfortable and convenient form of transportation. With a car people can go any place they want without spending a lot of money.
Another important reason is that people want to be independent. They don't like to wait for a bus, or a train. They don't like to have to follow an exact schedule. A car gives them the freedom to schedule their own time. And this is the freedom that most car owners want most to have. Of course, when you take a plane or a train; you must catch the plane or train according to the plane or train timetable. So the most convenient mode of transport is car, you can travel anytime and anywhere you like.
Can you imagine the transportation in the future and describe it for me?
        Oh, this is really difficult. With the rapid development of energy sources, I believe now cars powered by natural gas or solar energy will be popular in the future. Streets will no longer be crowded. And, the air will be clean and the sky will be blue.
        Well, I think the car will remain a leading means of urban travel in the future. But it will undoubtedly change quite a lot. It should become smaller, safer, more convenient and comfortable and more economical. And the most important thing is that it won't be powered by the gasoline engine. The car of the future should be more pollution-free than present types. Of course, the main problem still remains traffic jams. Perhaps one of the solutions will be to create a sort of automated highway system with a monitoring computer. What a driver should do is use a telephone to dial instructions about his destination into the system. The computer will calculate the best route and reserve space for the car all the way to the correct exit from the highway.

14        Do you easily make friends when you travel on holidays?
15        Do you still keep in touch with anybody you met while travelling?
Helpful Ideas and Useful Expressions.
What interesting tourist places have you been to?
        I believe Xiamen is the most interesting place that I have ever visited. I went there last year and it made a great impression on me. I went there by package tour, and the guide took us to many places of interest. The scenery is charming. We climbed the mountains, visited the famous temples, went to the beach and swam in the sea. I guess this place is now the best¬preserved in China, and it's fortunate that it remains unspoiled. What made me feel most interested in the city is that people there are extremely friendly and hospitable. You know, since it was my first time there, I lost my way one day. When I asked local people where I should go, they told me the direction very patiently. I was really overwhelmed by their hospitality and friendliness. I hope that I will have time to go there again some day in the future.
Do you enjoy tasting local food when you visit a new place?
        Yes, of course. Almost all the tourist places have their special local food. And many places are even renowned for their unique local snacks. Whenever I visit a new place I have a good appetite for all kinds of special local snacks. And actually I enjoyed the atmosphere and the good feeling about tasting local food during my stay.
