题目:ISSUE 144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value." *a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc. 字数:512 用时:1:04:17 日期:2007-6-19 There is so much controversy over the issue, who is more important to our society, the artist or the critic? Some people claims that the critic merely evaluates works of art but the artist gives society something of lasting value and actually creates the works of art such as novels, films, music, paintings and the like, thus the artist is more important. However, as far as I am concerned, the artist and critic are equally important to our society; they are mutually instructive. It is common knowledge that the artist creates the works of art which make our life more beautiful and colorful and give society something of lasting value. The artist is the person who practices on art, which is defined as the expression and creation of what is beautiful and colorful. How does the art impact our life? Art can effect on not only individuals but also the society. It enhances our life by instilling beautiful things surrounding us. People's mind can acquire relaxation and satisfaction from the works of art. According to the function of art, it is true that the artist is important to our society. Without the artist, we cannot imagine that how tedious our world is. However, there is also no need to overlook the critic's effect to our society. Whereas the critic's job is to make a evaluation of works of art, which plays a crucial role in the development of art. The most important impact of the critic is to discover the valuable works of art and artist. An old saying goes:" An excellent horse which can run one thousand mile per day also need to be discovered by the very person." It means the value of the works of art cannot emerge automatically. Moreover, for a ordinary person, though he has a good feeling about the works of art, he cannot express the value of works of art systematically and clearly. It is fine, because he is not the expert on evaluating the works of art. The critic is the expert, and therefore he can help us to understand much better about the works of art. Without the critics, our society will lost so much talent artist, such as Von Gogh, who never won the fame in his short and misery life. Furthermore, the critics also can help the artist improve his works of art. The critic's evaluation always has two sides: one is to find the works' style, which can help ordinary people appreciate the works much better; the other is to compare with other works, and then may find some flaws of the works. Before a young artist forms his own style, he must have a few deficiencies which can be pointed out by the critic. Then the young will assimilate these proposes and go much further. To sum up, either the artist or the critic is both important to individuals and our society. No matter lacking whom, our development of art will go to an embarrassing field. Actually, the artist and the critic can help each other and bring our society more beautiful and colorful works of art. |
