Issue177："The study of an academic discipline alters the way we perceive the world. After studying the discipline, we see the same world as before, but with different eyes."

At the beginning of this issue, let’s ponder a problem, that is, what the study of an academic discipline brings to us. From the traditional way, the study of an academic could expand our knowledge, broaden our eyes, and even bring up the skill to work. Besides, which may be more essential, the study of an academic discipline alters the way we perceive the world and the way we interact with the world, at the same time, limits the way we react the world.

The study of an academic discipline changes the way we perceive the world through altering angles and sights we see the world before. After the study, we may find the way we view the world is involved in the special knowledge and even the given world view. Francis Bacon, a British Philosopher and educator have said “Histories make men wise; poems witty; the mathematics subtle; natural philosophy deep; moral grave; logic and rhetoric able to contend.”  As it stands, the study of an academic discipline influences one’s character, and proceeds to alter the way we view the world. Another example is that with the study we know that solar eclipse is a physical phenomenon while without the study our ancient took it as a mysterious phenomenon. On account for the study, we could see the same world as before, but with different eyes to become more intelligent.

Moreover, the study of an academic discipline not only alters t he way wee perceive the world, but also changes the way we interact with the world. Let’s take a look at our education, which a man with knowledge of agriculture may think of a way to provide more food to the world; a man educated as an economist may do his best to make more profits; a doctor may take healing the wounded and rescuing the dying as his own duty. Without the study, we may still be fatuous and bourgeois as we do before. It is the study that changes our world view and even activity.

However, the study of an academic discipline also brings limited eyes while bringing alterative eyes. We may be counteracted in the way if we depend on the discipline too much so that losing the ability to see a long term and be more practical. Newton, the most famous physicist in the world, who wallowed in theology in his late years, was confined by it and even lose the scientific eyes he owned before. Although he wanted to explain it is what that forces the planet revolute around the sun, the results of the study of the theology is paid off handsomely. Additionally, as amuel Johnson, a British writer says, “The foundation of knowledge must be laid by reading; General principles must come from books, which, however, must be brought to the test of real life.” If we are too reliant on the special discipline, we may lose the courage of finding the mistake and correcting it, which may be the reason why we study so many academic disciplines in school.

So, as my conclusion, study of an academic will change our cognitions, our perspectives and of course, alter our way to view the world, interact with the world. After studying, what appears before you is a completely new picture, although the same world, but different eyes and even limited eyes.
