I agree with the speaker that rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Nevertheless, I content with his or her assertion that societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are if there were no rituals and ceremonies, for two fundamental reasons. On the one hand, rituals and ceremonies are far from being considered as amount to culture, nor the only instruments by which the culture be expressed; on the other hand, most traditional rituals and ceremonies changed and may even disappeared.

I concede that one of the purposes of rituals and ceremonies in society is to preserve a culture. As different nation enjoys different culture, and rituals and ceremonies of each nation, with varied forms, do reflect some particular aspects of its culture. Thing that always happen is, when it comes to a wedding, various rituals and ceremonies will be hold to celebrate this special day. In china, there would be a big party in a hotel, after the new couples receiving blessing and gifts from their parents, they together with guests gathering together eating and talking and laughing. While in Western countries, weddings are hold in a church. One of the characteristics differs most from China is the new couples have to be witnessed by the pastor. Whatever the day is, festival, wedding, funeral, etc., there is always some ceremonies are hold in connection with it, which at the same time provide the rest of the world with opportunities to understanding the nation.

Though it is true that rituals and ceremonies more or less represent a culture of a nation, it is not necessary to overstate their contribution. Nor are rituals and ceremonies the only means of the preservation of a culture, they are at most one of the numinous instruments that could express part of a culture. For instance, we can recognize a culture by its costumes, color of skin, diet, gesture, way of communications, and so forth. Rituals and ceremonies play less important roles as compared to before.

Further more, as with the development and innovation of the society, many original rituals and ceremonies have changed and disappeared. In other word, without them, the nation exists still and its culture remains the same. Among these I would list one of Chinese ceremonies. Hundreds of years ago, when it is under the imperial era which, keeps a daily ritual is, morning rally; those cabinet ministers of each dynasty should meet to the king everyday and they should first worship on bended knees saying respectful words. Nowadays, this ritual that once served as part of Chinese five thousand traditional cultures is disappeared, while we can not say the Chinese culture is disappeared.

In sum, rituals and ceremonies are instrumental to present certain aspects of a culture and help preserve a culture. Nevertheless, it should be well recognized that there are plenty forms of culture identify, and they change. In other word, without rituals and ceremonies, societies or groups of people would not diminish their sense of who they are.
